deactivating proprietary driver Nvidia G73 GeForce Go 7600

Post#1 by jmheneman » 03 Apr 2014, 00:04

I tried the three available nvidia drivers without success (319, 304, 173).
The resolution is always 1024x768, the laptop is able to do 1440x900.
(Without nvidia drivers, there is no complaints, but run in 1024x768 anyway.)

Just before attemting to start X, the following message appeared :
Xorg failed to startup - deactivating proprietary driver(s).

Then, then LXDE starts and the res is 1024x768.

Configuration :
- Porteus 3.0 LXDE with Chrome (I verified all the iso md5sum with success).
- (Laptop: ) Toshiba Satellite P100 (Nvidia G73 GeForce Go 7600) Model number : PSPA3C-MA202C
-- 2GB RAM (so plenty of memory!)

By the way, in build.porteus.org, the 319 option for nvidia will put the 334 version within the iso...

What should I do to debug this?

Thanks,
Jean-Marc

I tested them with a frugal install to HDD (Porteus installer and Porteus-installer-for-Linux.com).
And I double checked with dd'ing an isohybrid version of the iso to an USB key.
(So, yes, at least 6 boots. 3 versions of nvidia X 2 types of installation.
For other reasons, I also experimented with grub2 boots with from=....iso with the same results, see
https://sites.google.com/site/grubcfg/porteus .)

During the boot, I can see that the nvidia module is loaded.
And the following message is displayed just before X is started :
Xorg failed to startup - deactivating proprietary driver(s)

Please boot with the nVidia module loaded. Run the Porteus Information tool found in Porteus Settings Centre and get a system information dump. Upload the dump to pastebin and link to it here.

Weird :
I did the dump from Porteus System and accept it to send to pastebin...
... but the file /tmp/pastebin-link.txt is empty?!?!

Where has been written the dump content (in what file)?
(I will paste it by hand if necessary.)

(Meanwhile I will verify if by booting a USB key with the same distro, I can get the pastebin link.)

Still no success with an external USB HDD where the iso (hybrid) has been dd'd.
After the dump, cat /tmp/pastebin-link.txt returns nothing (in root).
(The file exists, wc /tmp/pastebin-link.txt returns 1 0 1, so there is onle one character in the file that is a new line.)

So what can I do?

I pasted it from /root/Desktop/psinfo_report.txt .

you are using wrong nVidia driver (and that's why it gets unloaded by our Xorg protection mechanism), see:
http://www.nvidia.com/object/IO_32667.html

you should pull 304.xx driver instead.
Please add [Solved] to your thread title if the solution was found.

I will try again with 304 with the iso from the build.porteus.org, but I did it earlier without success...

I'll be back to you on that with the dump.

Still no success with the 304.
Here is the Porteus System Info dump :
http://pastebin.com/ZKG3yiCe

(I took a moment to take a look at the dump, I wonder where the deactivation occurs at it is written on console 1.)

Let me know how I can help.

Thanks,
Jean-Marc

please try 173.x - if that wont work then you'll have to stick to open source drivers i'm afraid.
Please add [Solved] to your thread title if the solution was found.

173 does not work.
:(

I may try to see how ubuntu is dealing with that laptop if I have time.
(I will post my findings but by looking in the net, does not look so good.
I know I will not be satisfied with ubuntu or derivatives solution, because they are not so light as Porteus ;-) )

Thanks for your patience!
