How to install a Canon Pixma MP190 printer+scanner

Post#1 by jmurrinux » 14 Mar 2014, 23:02

Hello wonderful forum people,
Would you Please help me with a step by step instructions about how to install a Canon Pixma MP190 printer+scanner.

This is what I have done so far:
- At this forum topic Porteus 3.0 release, it tells me that I should download the printer module 32 bits to work with the 64 bits version I run
(note that the compat-32 module is required for this to work with 64-bit porteus) - thanks Blaze and Francois!
- I did download the printer module 32 bits version from this location: 07-Printing.xzm
- Then located the downloaded file, right click on it, from the menu options I selected Open with.../ Activate
- Looked at the recently installed applications and this list appears or see Screenshot
  • * XSane - Scanner
    * Canon Scanner Utility
    * Simple Scan
    * QT V4L2 test Utility
    * Print Settings
    * Manage Printing
    * Printer Management Application "HP logo"
- Clicking the Print Settings icon, there is a printer icon that bounces next to the mouse cursor but it goes away and that's all.
- I click on each other application icon and nothing happens

I also downloaded the available debian package for the printer, I created a Porteus module, after I unpacked the compressed files and made the folder conversion to a xzm module, activated, but I can't see the results of previous described actions. :%)

Also, I did update the USM application, I found a printer application there and installed: system-config-printer-1.3.13-x86_64-1.txz without successful results

Thanks-congratulations for the new release and good luck to you all :O:
Thank you!

What's wrong with http://ponce.cc/porteus/x86_64/current/ ... inting.xzm ?

I don't use 64bit release even on 64bit machine, hence I have not tested the above.

I, however, am sure you're inviting problems by mixing/using 32bit modules while running a 64bit OS.

@jmurrinux:

1.0 Printing
It seems that bdheeman has made the exact diagnostic. :wink:

You are trying to print with a module that has the wrong architecture (32bit instead of 64bit). Once you install the right 64bit 07-printing.xzm:
http://ponce.cc/porteus/x86_64/current/modules/

Just do what you did: install 07-printing.xzm in the /porteus/modules folder with a double-click (or activate it as you did with the contextual menu). (There is no need to install system-config-printer as it is already included into the 07-printing.xzm package or module.)

Your printer model Canon Pixma MP190 is included in the package. Thru kde >applications > system > print settings > add, install your printer (usb mode I presume!).

2.0 Scanning
Once your printer is functional (print test page ok), try in cli mode the following command to see if your scanner is recognized:

Code: Select all

root@porteus:~# /usr/bin/scangearmp
If not, you will have to set the scanner with the use of lsusb and the creation of /lib/udev/rules.d/60-libsane.rules and in it some specific instructions for your printer:
http://forum.ubuntu-fr.org/viewtopic.php?id=944191

Another way to set the scanner is thru this method requiring gimp:
http://geniusworldone.blogspot.ca/2009/ ... mp190.html

Hello forum and francois,

Did these steps:
1- Downloaded the correct architecture printer module
2- Removed the system-config-printer
3- Deactivated 32 bits printer module
4- Move the downloaded module to /mnt/sda1/porteus/modules/07-printing.xzm
5- On root session, Activated module
6- The printer isn't detected, Add button is greyed out
7- Press F1 for help and it says the CUPS isn't on
8- Rebooted like three times
9- Verified that the printer was ON, and USB cable connected to the CPU + printer

When I log as Guest, the printer icons aren't available on KDE menu

What else can I do? :pardon:
Thank you!

Really surprised. I imagine that you printer is plugged in and on. :wink:

Did you tried to set up the printer under root mode? Is CUPS functioning? Did you tried thru CUPS too to install your printer?

Otherwise, please download once again porteus including the printer module thru webwizard:
http://build.porteus.org/

Verify that the md5sum is ok.

@jmurrinux
is your printer connected through usb? if yes - please do a clean 64bit install with printing pack included and nothing else (no 32bit stuff or debian packages). then boot porteus and run following command as root:

Code: Select all

lpadmin -p porteus-printer -E -v `lpinfo -v | grep usb:// | cut -d" " -f2 | head -n1` -m gutenprint.5.2://bjc-MULTIPASS-MP190/expert
that should be it for the printing part, not sure about the scanner though (i have just started with printing/scanning under linux). if need to tweak some settings then type 'localhost:631' in the browser and do it from there (admin is 'root', password is 'toor').
Please add [Solved] to your thread title if the solution was found.

Please try fanthom suggestion, you might get some response with lp commands.

1.0 Do you have some output with your printer when you do the lsusb command output (here is mine):
http://forum.porteus.org/viewtopic.php?f=39&t=1336

Code: Select all

bash-4.1:~$ lsusb
Bus 004 Device 002: ID 08ff:2580 AuthenTec, Inc. AES2501 Fingerprint Sensor

Bus 001 Device 002: ID 05e3:0608 Genesys Logic, Inc. USB-2.0 4-Port HUB
Bus 001 Device 001: ID 1d6b:0002 Linux Foundation 2.0 root hub
bash-4.1:~$
2.0 According to this thread on a another type of canon printers the lbp you might need to add /etc/init.d/ccpd start' command to the /etc/rc.local file:
viewtopic.php?f=61&t=1983
Log in as 'root' and add the '/etc/init.d/ccpd start' command to the /etc/rc.local file. To do this use kwrite to open the /ect/rc.d/rc.local file and modify it so that it looks this way:

Code: Select all

#!/bin/sh
#
# /etc/rc.d/rc.local: Local system initialization script.
#
# Put any local startup commands in here. Also, if you have
# anything that needs to be run at shutdown time you can
# make an /etc/rc.d/rc.local_shutdown script and put those
# commands in there.

# For Canon Pixma printer drivers start ccpd
/etc/init.d/ccpd start
Please keep us inform of you manipulations. We are eager to pin the problem down. :)

Note: I wonder if blaze and ahau wouldn't have any suggestions as they have or did worked on canon printers.

I have started in Always Fresh mode, install 07-printing.xzm and install the Canon MP145 printer using kde >applications > system > print settings > add, install your printer.
@jmurrinux should have no problem following these steps for his MP190.

BTW I'm using KDE 64bit.

Note: I am not able to scan using scangearmp.
Install simple-scan and it is working as before.

Hello cttan. :)

Do you mean that simple scan, without any additional instructions, will scan out of the box when the printer drivers are installed for your canon printer?

No need to install simple-scan, it is already included in printing.xzm.

Hi jmurrinux.

I use Porteus 3.0 (64 bits)
07-printing.xzm (64 bits)
compat32-libraries-3.0-x86_64-1sl.xzm
without additions modules.

Go to kde >applications > system > print settings > add, install your printer and then try to print a test page (do it as root in Always Fresh mode)

I hope you will be succeed. My printer Canon IP1500 work fine for me.

Thanks francois.

I have tested using simple-scan and no printer is installed.
I can scan without any problem.

@Blaze
I do not have to activate compat32-libraries-3.0-x86_64-1sl.xzm to get the printer working.

Hello forum,

I reinstalled porteus on my HDD, updated the USM, downloaded the printing module, moved the printing module to the porteus/modules folder, then activated it.
The USB connected Canon Pixma MP190 printer+scanner was successfully recognized by the new installed software.
Printed the test page: Success
Scanned a page with simple scan: Success [Canon scanner utility doesn't recognize the scanner]

Thanks to all whom replied to this [Solved] topic
Thank you!
