[Solved] Can I use unetbootin to create a live USB? Yes.

Post#1 by mparillo » 14 Mar 2014, 19:13

I just downloaded the ISO, and I wonder, can I create a live USB using unetbootin? Asking because that is my tried and true method.

IMO The fastest way to find out is to try unetbootin and see if it works, or post on it's forum and ask.

Unetbootin testimony with porteus:

I was having trouble booting a stick with Porteus installed. Followed the instructions to install to the stick using Linux (instead of installing from a Porteus Live CD). Everything seemed to be fine, but the stick just did not boot. Perhaps there are some ownership issues that need sorting.

Anyway, tried mmmna's unetbootin package, and it set up the USB stick just fine. Porteus was not on the UNetBootin list of OS's, but it worked when I plugged in the right path to the .iso.

Yes I can!!!
I did nothing fancy:
- I booted MS-Windows 7
- I downloaded the ISO (32-bit KDE, Chrome, Skype, and Libre Office)
- I Formatted my USB (FAT-32)
- I used unetbootin to point to the ISO
- I re-booted
- I am in.

The default seemed to indicate persistence, but I guess because I formatted the USB in Windows, it reverted to 'Always Fresh', which sounds like my 'Live USB' use case. I am fine with that, but it briefly flashed a message about using a tool to create a file where persistent data is stored. Not that it is a big deal, as I like my USB to be 'Always Fresh', but I suppose it is the Porteus Save File Manager under my Kickoff Application Launcher?

Indeed it is. Just create a savefile using the 'save file manager' and then boot with the cheat code: changes=/mnt/sdaxY/path/to/savefile.dat
