How to install software?
Good day,
few weeks ago I decided to move to LInux, tested a bunch of distros. So far Porteus seems an ideal choice. The problem is - my Linux "skills" are mostly limited to copying and pasting googled commands to terminal So I can't find out how to install any additional software in Porteus. I've read, there is Porteus Package Manager, but, as far as I understood, it is temporary removed from current build and USM should be used instead. Could someone provide an example, how to install, let's say, VLC player or WIne? (I've tried to read USM help, but still can't manage to install anything )
Another question - is there a way to edit an existing keyboard layout in Porteus?

Re: How to install software?
the first time you use usm you will need to update it so that it gets a package list
so in terminal type:
then, for example if you want to download vlc type:
follow the prompts and it will download all the packages to /tmp/usm/
From there its as easy as right clicking and selecting convert to xzm module.
-To activate them right click and choose activate
-To load these packages everytime you boot, you will need to copy the modules to the /porteus/modules/ folder on the hdd you installed porteus on.
dont forget to read the faq and docs on the porteus.org page.
so in terminal type:
Code: Select all
usm -u all
Code: Select all
usm -g vlc
From there its as easy as right clicking and selecting convert to xzm module.

-To load these packages everytime you boot, you will need to copy the modules to the /porteus/modules/ folder on the hdd you installed porteus on.

Welcome standard_u
Are you sure you have usm:
panel menu > system > usm
There should be no deb files with this package manager.
I am in usm now. Please select wine-1.7.14- finishing with alien.txz.
Have a look at the last post of this thread. I just gave the same explanations:

Re: How to install software?
Now in the file manager select view and sort by file type. Keep the modules which are those ending by .xzm, delete the others.
Then take the whole wine folder and move it to /porteus/modules so that it will start at bootup (in that folder modules will be automatically activated at each reboot). Reboot.
Or activate each module one by one by double-clicking on them. Wine should then be in the panel menu.
If there is a problem with your wine package and libraries installation, try wine in command line and give us the output.

Re: How to install software?
Did you try thru rebooting completely? It is as if wine was not installed.

Re: How to install software?
for wine in system x86_64 you need compat32-libraries
here: http://ponce.cc/porteus/x86_64/current/ ... 64-1sl.xzm
Edit: porteus have module wine in xzm
here: http://ponce.cc/porteus/x86_64/current/ ... 1alien.xzm
Activate compat32-libraries and wine modules.

the rest all give no errors and ack being activated

Re: How to install software?
You can't expect to download and save files (with persistence after rebooting) unless you have a physical writable place to put them. I recommend installing Porteus on a USB device or at least using the USB device to save your files to and using the changes= cheatcode (see documentation).
The idea is that after you download and convert your Porteus modules (*.xzm) you put them in the porteus/modules folder on the media you installed Porteus on. They are then available every time you boot. Grab the file suggested by slaxmax if you are using 64bit.

Re: How to install software?
my usb stick is only 65 Mb. i have no HD it died last nite. i have porteus on a RW-DVD . i got 4 gigs of RAM.
Now are you saying I have to reboot to install wine ?
Obviously I am very new to this system Linux its my first day after all..
I have not got to the "how to make changes to the boot CD " stage yet , but it seems I may already be there ..lol
I got a few more blanks to play with. i'll look inthe forums here for a fast, "how to update the CD " lesson.
Meanwhile , I used the file suggested, it doesnt return any errors, it says wine activated , however i dont see wine in any of the menus all i find is the wine config button/icon whatever its called in the settings menu of the appplication menu. It does nothing when selected.
I'm guessing i can pop out the boot cd and put in another to save these files on if igotta keep rebooting ??
