Porteus works - why??? (pm & multimedia) - which way now?

My task is to install Linux on a friend's brand new computer (Thinkstation D-20)*
[with the goal of installing Photoshop in a VBox running Win7].

The owner is not a computer friendly sort, but very much the creative type (photography & music).

For the last days (& nights) I have tried one by one, the latest 64 bit versions of
Ubuntu Studio,
Mint,
OpenSUSE,
Debian,
Fedora 19,
CentOS 6.5,
Ubuntu
even Elementry OS.

None were able to hibernate nor at least suspend, and some, would not even play multimedia files.
Many of these OS's did most things very well, but none when it came to the power management.

...on the verge of giving up ...

Porteus does it ALL! (the Mate version, will try KDE next)

However I feel uneasy trying to do a "frugal install" on his SAS drive. (-and not sure where he will keep his gigabytes of multimedia .../home files...?)
Should I continue to look for a gui "desktop" version of Slackware - is that why Porteus works with this machine? - or is it the kernel version? (or both, and a lot of other elements!)
If anyone has any suggestions as to which way I should go from here,
I would be very grateful.

* 2x Intel Xeon X5670-6C-2.93GHz
16GB DDR3 ECC UDIMM 1333MHz
300GB 15k SAS + 1TB 7200rpm SATA
nVidia Quadro FX1800 768MB

I think you will find that porteus is alot more user friendly than slackware.

Porteus is an amazing distro and there are many benifits to a frugal install. Maybe consider a partition for the porteus install and a separate partition to save all his data on.

hi dumascon,
However I feel uneasy trying to do a "frugal install" on his SAS drive.
probably some SAS driver is not compiled directly into kernel. please boot porteus on your friend's PC and show me output of 'lspci -knn' command.
even if driver is really missing then he could boot porteus from CD/USB and save changes on 1TB 7200rpm SATA drive. just create 'prt-changes' folder on one of it's partitions (must be formatted with linux filesystem like ext4 otherwise you'll have to go with save.dat container) and then boot with 'changes=prt-changes' cheatcode. or frugal installation could be done directly on SATA.
porteus is very flexible :)

Greetings & thank you for your reply.
probably some SAS driver is not compiled directly into kernel. please boot porteus on your friend's PC and show me output of 'lspci -knn' command.

Here is the output from lspci -knn :

Is the driver for the SAS drive missing?

Thanks again in advance.

yes -the driver is missing:

Code: Select all

01:00.0 RAID bus controller [0104]: Marvell Technology Group Ltd. MV64460/64461/64462 System Controller, Revision B [11ab:6485] (rev 01)
   Subsystem: Lenovo Device [17aa:1023]
you could recompile kernel yourself and add missing CONFIG_SCSI_MVSAS option:
http://cateee.net/lkddb/web-lkddb/SCSI_MVSAS.html
as per this instruction:
click
but probably the best idea is to use the SATA drive instead.

btw: for Porteus-3.0 i'll probably add some SCSI/SAS drivers to the kernel but compiled as modules (as they are big). you wont be able to boot from these devices but at least you'll be able to access them after boot.

(only the Mate version worked with the power management, KDE would not - so Mate it will be)
-----------------------

Right. Thank you for looking at that. I was afraid it wasn't seeing it, but not sure.
Well, at least I have learned something from you.

OK! - then I will put Proteus on the SATA. That will probably be challenging enough for me.

Thank you for your time, excellent advice &
lots of Good Luck.
