Setting up Porteus with Virtualbox

Post#1 by DrPastah » 06 Sep 2013, 07:13

Hi, I'm new to Linux and I'm required to use it for my learning in school. So I'm trying to install Persistent Pertous on a USB thumb drive that will mainly be run off Virtualbox with a Windows host.
I would also like it if it can also be booted up with as well.

I watched your video of https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sqP2ld_Kxys and read http://www.porteus.org/phocadownload/po ... %20windows.

I clicked from Start>System Tools>VirtualBox Builder
I made a guest pass, registered the module, and put it under /mnt/sda1/porteus/modules

However when I try to share a folder, I don't see the folder.

I'm also wondering if the partition needs to be in a certain format, so far I've tried ext3 and ntfs, however ntfs gives me the settings not being saved issue.

I'm wondering how can I have bidirectional file transfers from windows to the virtualized Pertous OS, and back.

I'm also wondering how I can have a proper login screen where I pick who to login as?

Bear in mind, I'm very new to Linux.

hi DrPastah,
However when I try to share a folder, I don't see the folder.
you have to generate guest-addons module through our 'VirtualBox builder' and add it to /porteus/modules
I'm also wondering if the partition needs to be in a certain format, so far I've tried ext3 and ntfs, however ntfs gives me the settings not being saved issue.
i recommend ext4 so you wont have to use save.dat container (required only for windows filesystems).
I'm wondering how can I have bidirectional file transfers from windows to the virtualized Pertous OS, and back.
probably shared folders is the best solution. if host would be running linux then sshfs comes to the rescue (i'm using it all the time).
I'm also wondering how I can have a proper login screen where I pick who to login as?
you should read our documentation before starting with Porteus.
hint: /boot/docs/cheatcodes.txt
Please add [Solved] to your thread title if the solution was found.

I already did so but I still wasn't able to get the shared folder working.

If you achieved to get into the virtualbox program there is the menu list some option about how to use virtualbox. They have a detailed explanation about using shared folder under linux. Please read it and report if there are additionnal problems. You have to work a little on your own. Tell us what you do not understand about the instructions provided by virtualbox. Don't forget that the linux learning slope is steep. However, we will be happy to make it a little milder. :)

Setting up Porteus with Virtualbox-PORTEUS LIVE USB

Post#5 by caron gangoo » 14 Jul 2014, 15:16

Hi from Mauritius( Indian Ocean ),

Still I quit Windows for Linux, I learn so much fantastic things and I'm still on learning curve ! :Yahoo!:
This is why I discovered Porteus , so small but so powerful as I am used to Ubuntu, Mint , Kali ....lol! 8)
So I created a Porteus Vm on my Linux Mint 17 Quiana and it runs perfectly -
 But I want to go further and I want my Porteus be able to recognize usb devices -as I did with " add USER vboxusers" command : ( this allowed me for exemple to boot Windows 7 on a Usb 16gb flash drive but that 's another story....llloooollll  )
My final aim is to create a live Usb - i tried with Unetbootin but it didn't work :bad:

So what must I do ?

Thank you in advance and keep up the good work ( if I wasn't such a fan on Quiana, I would have chosen Porteus as Os on my Dell Vostro 1015 !)

Cheers

Caron

Install bootloader to your flash drive (syslinux, lilo, grub4dos, grub2). More: http://forum.porteus.org/viewforum.php?f=62
You have mind and feelings. Be wise and clever.

So what must I do ?
Format the USB drive as ext4.
Copy the files inside the ISO onto the USB drive
cd /mnt/sdxY/boot ## Where sdxY is the partition of the Porteus install on USB
sh Porteus-installer-for-Linux.com
Reboot.

That is not a valid URL for the image.

For Virtualbox make sure you have the 05-devel.xzm module in your porteus/modules folder and reboot. Then from the menu choose the VIrtualBox builder.
