If you are prompted for the root password, it is 'toor' (root spelled backwards). You need to enter this password, not the guest password, in order to elevate the permissions to create a save.dat file. After you get the password correct, the dialog box should walk you through the rest. If you have additional questions, just let us know. :)

You may put this file wherever you like. The important part is that the system knows where to find it. Using the Porteus Settings Centre, go to the changes page and choose to edit your porteus.cfg file. Assuming you put you changes file on the root of your USB you should add (or change) the changes= line to look like this.

/mnt/sdxY/porteussave.dat

xY should be changed to suit your drive setup, and porteussave.dat should be the name of your save file. On the next boot it should locate the file. If you run Porteus from a linux partition (ext2, ext3, xfs) then you don't need a changes file.
