Create zip archive?

Post#1 by Bogdan » 09 Jan 2013, 22:23

I just don't get this Squeeze tool. I add a folder which i want in archive, but it is added as full path of folders. Example: i want folder "my folder" (which is in downloads for example) in zip archive, when i make archive with Squeeze i get archive that have "home/guest/downloads/my folder". Any solution or just suggest me a good archiver...

Hi Bogdan,

I included squeeze in 1.2 because it is small, has few dependencies, and is associated with the Xfce, however, I have found it lacking in many respects (primarily, it is no longer actively maintained). for Porteus 2.0 I have moved to file-roller which comes from the gnome project. Please give Porteus-Xfce 2.0 RC1 a try if you have time and see if you like file-roller any better.
Please take a look at our online documentation, here. Suggestions are welcome!

Installed xarchiver (http://xarchiver.sourceforge.net/), works very good, depends on thunar so no additional dependencies needed for xfce, and have option "don't store full path" which I missed in squeeze...

Yes many people would wait for Porteus 2.0 final.
As I said, Porteus should show up Porteus 2.0.0 and only after, the bugs will be filled with 2.0.1 or 2.0.2 or 2.0.x .
I never said that Porteus 2.0.0 final should appear now !

File-roller could be a good thing but I wonder if it is not too closed with gnome, especially gnome 3... :unknown:
I like Slackware so I tried Porteus...

@bogdan, glad xarchiver is working for you. It is also unmaintained and has a few bugs that affect certain filetypes, so I won't be using it in the Xfce ISO but you can always add it if you like it best.

@kadalka, the only new dependency brought in by file-roller is gtk3, which is also needed for volumeicon, and soon will be required by xfce (perhaps by version 4.14). If file-roller doesn't work for us, my only other alternative is to write my own archiver in gtkdialog or learn C and write one...so I really hope it works out!

Also, I would encourage everyone who likes Porteus to download and give the RC's try, even if it's a quick cd burn, as your feedback will help ensure the final release is better :)
