USB install, Package Manager, choose directory

Installed today, v1.2 32 bit, toroot copy2ram on a USB stick with FAT32.

When I select Package Manager, it prompts me to set a directory to download the modules, but my USB drive with the /porteus directory does not appear in the media path.

I am getting long lag times on Firefox and occasionally an error message about a script that appears to be a js script.

You can select any drive outside of your USB drive for the destination storage. Your drive is most certainly mounted (unless you chose to copy2ram and eject boot device) so please check under /mnt/sdb1 or something similar. If you can't find it please give the terminal output of: grep -A1 data /var/log/porteus-livedbg

For firefox please provide error message, or start firefox from a terminal and monitor the terminal ouput.

per cheatcodes.txt:

Code: Select all

copy2ram

... Copy all files (all required and optional modules) to RAM.
You'll need at least 320MB of RAM to do this and boot Porteus
properly. (64-bit Porteus with KDE-4 requires at least 768MB of
RAM for this) This will slow down the boot phase but it will
       speed up Porteus!

Reminder: the 'noeject' cheatcode can be used together with
'copy2ram' to prevent unmounting of your booting media
(CD/DVD disc, usb, card readers, etc)
Sounds like the default behaviour (in version 1.2 at least) is to unmount the flash drive once the data is loaded, unless 'noeject' is used as well.

Please try adding 'noeject' to your cheatcodes' or you could also mount the drive manually.

Booting with noeject, the path to /media/sdb1 does not appear, the /media directory is empty when using Mplayer.

mount /dev/sdb1 returns "already mounted" on /mnt/sdb1

I reset the factory default on Porteus Package Manager, and restarted. Then set the path to /mnt/sdb1 in the setup window.

so please check under /mnt/sdb1 or something similar
The confusion is understood since plugging in a USB device will mount it under 'media'. Other drives (system drives) are mounted under 'mnt'. I believe Fanthom is tweaking the mount system to mount everything nicely in one place for the next version.

The Firefox delay happens frequently when accessing a new page.

Occasionally there is an error mesage:

Firefox error message:

A script on this page may be busy, or it may have stopped responding. You can stop the script now, or you can continue to see if the script will complete.

Script: resource:///components/nsContentPrefService.js:1294

wish it would be that easy...
i can tweak default mount point of internal devices easily but udisk mounts hot-pluggable devices in /media (this could be changed by adding some rules i believe) and gvfs (or udisk2 - cant remember) mounts in /run/something. @Ahau - please confirm
i dont know how to handle that yet...

please link me to an example of that page.
is it also happening when you boot into 'always fresh' mode?
what's your CPU model?

thanks

this forum is one example, another is reddit.com. Most pages cause a delay. Not sure about the always fresh boot, I rarely use it.

I have to wait about 20 seconds after the page loads before I can use the mouse to click anything

I am using an ASUS EEE PC 1201N, it is 64 bit capable

Please try it and see if the firefox problem is better. I can't reproduce it. Both the forum and reddit load in around 1 second for me. I also can't see any script that should cause much work for a processor.

gvfs relies on udisks1 (via gnome-disk-utility) in Porteus-Xfce 1.2, so it mounts removable drives in /media/$label or /media/$uuid.

Porteus-Xfce 2.0 will use udisks2 for automounting, in order to drop gnome-disk-utility, and it does mount it in some weird place -- I still haven't memorized it. /var/run/$user/$label, /run/$user/$uuid, or something like that. From a brief google search, it sounds like this is hard-coded into udisks2, which would mean patching the source code in order to change this location (disks are mounted there instead of /media for security purposes). I think the only way to handle it otherwise would be to write custom udev rules to mount them elsewhere (probably also umounting them from /run/ and /media/).

I do not experience the delay in Always Fresh boot.

@cotg
dual-core Intel Atom processor may be a bit too low to handle encryption and writing to usb in real time.
fortunately porteus-2.0 should bring a solution as it will handle 'EXIT:' extension to 'changes=' cheatcode which means that changes will be dumped on the stick only at the reboot/shutdown and not in real time (less I/O == less CPU power).
this should provide a nice performance boost as 'changes=EXIT:' means that in fact you are working in 'Always Fresh' till the shutdown.

another possibility of the delays could be a container size.
1GB should be enough for most people so make sure your one has no less than that.

btw: our amazing 'savefile manager' allows you to resize existing container if needed

That sounds like a good improvement. For now I have made a module of my changes and am trying boot into Always Fresh with an optional module, which doesn't save changes but it gets my desktop set up the way I like it. I know this is not secure but it is fast. Thanks

When will Porteus 2.0 be released? Is there any pre-releases out?

@phill42083
we are still working on it and dont want to release in a hurry and then regret.

please wait a bit and i can guarantee that your patience will be rewarded.

Cheers

EDIT:\\

ok -i'll reveal some news as users deserve them:
just today i have bumped graphics stack to mesa-9.0.1 (for the first time in the history OpenGL-3.x for the latest GPU's in open-source drivers), libdrm-2.4.40, latest DDX drivers.
that means we are will have newer components than slackware-current but do not worry - i'll make sure it wont break compatibility with slackware-14.0 repos.
we are targeting kernel-3.7 for porteus-2.0 final and there will be latest version of the kde4 and razor-qt desktops.
LXDE and XFCE stays the same as in porteus-1.2 but it doesn't mean they wont be improved.

apologize for being "off topic"
