Porteus

Still learning !
I am less and less lost with Porteus and ventured in a batch of new softs.
It has worked successfully with simple programs.
I have seen GIMP, let's try !
The package manager indicate there were dependencies, successfully downloaded and so I had only one thing to do : activate.
At this stage, something strange happened, downloading started again ????
Eventually I could see GIMP, clicked on "activate" success !!!
GIMP is in the menu, but when I clicked on it I got a message
No panic !
With a console, I typed "gimp" and got the following :
guest@porteus:~$ gimp
gimp: error while loading shared libraries: libgegl-0.1.so.0: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory
So, I understand libgegl-0.1 is absent, but I could not find anything in the package manager
Where can it be hidden ??
Any tip ?

the package is named: gegl, version number, search for it

There are two dependencies ---> gegl and babl

They are found in Porteus repository

Still troubling
Today I have started, to see that games I had downloaded and activated yesterday had disappeared from the menu, and GIMP was absent too
Let's go back to the package manager and look for modules to activate.
Browsing the file, I can see GIMP plus all dependencies
One click away, GIMP is back on the menu and working
I suppose I am missing one step with packages installation.
I am installing a package, it is in the menu, I click on it, okay.
I turn of my computer, start it later, and everything I had added has no more entry in the menu
I can activate it again, but after shutting down and seeing the message telling it is saving my session they are gone again
What command am I missing ??????

I believe you need to move the modules (from whatever folder you are keeping them in) for all applications (and their dependencies) that you want activated on start-up into the /porteus/modules folder. "Saved changes" does not save which modules are activated. Modules in /porteus/modules will be activated on every boot-up.

Iapetus is right. The modules to be activated automatically at bootup have to be in the /porteus/modules folder.

Gimp is not easy to gather up. If you are looking for a functional but not extended version you can have a look at these tools indexed by brokenman:

They are not in alphabetical order, but you should find gimp with the search option of your browser.

However, if you are patient gathering together gimp and its libraries into modules will surely turn you into a accomplished porteus user.

You may also try deleting one of the gimp dependencies from your storage folder. Then when you run PPM again and try to activate GIMP it will download the dependency again and ask if you want to 'merge' all the modules into a single module. Answer yes and stick this single module in your /mnt/sdxY/porteus/modules folder so it activates at every boot.

Perhaps it would be a good addition to PPM to ask the user if they want to have the module 'activated' at every boot and do this automatically.

I have followed lapetus' advice, carefully browsing all folders, finding where I had to store modules, tried as guest and quickly switched to root.
I was successful in activating GIMP, Fotoxx, some good old games and even Opera, as root.
When activating Opera I got a warning message ...... well I shall see.
After activating everything I have rebooted as "guest" and, marvel !!! I could see what I had activated loading, and it was not a joke, they are in the menu, including Opera which is fully working

I think I have to do more "exercises" installing new soft and being very careful about the folder where I store modules.
The files structure is not easy to understand if you compare Porteus with other distros but once I have understood, it will be a game
I think I shall replug the Slackware disk to my computer, with all I have learned with Porteus, things will be less darker than before
I must also study François' tip !
