[QUASI SOLVED] PPM BUG

Re: porteus-XFCE-v1.2-i486.iso

Hi,
Porteus Package Manager freezes midway during initial Slackware 12.2 initialization procedure.

There has got to be a better way to recover from this error, than a complete power down/reboot?

Also, after a reboot, PPM reports:
! PPM is already running.
If it is not, then please remove:
/tmp/.ppmlock and restart

What is the correct method to remove the ppmlock file/directory?

Regards,
willard

SUMMARY:
HAD TO USE 'INSTALLPKG'

Code: Select all

su -c 'rm -Rf /tmp/.ppmlock'
Type your root password ("toor" by default) and press "Enter"

Dear Hamza:
Functionality returned to PPM and Search Slacky does not freeze, like Search Slackware did.

I'm basically running a test to see if Porteus can download a Slackware 12.2 package, convert, install and launch the app. The TGZ package is converted to XZM and is observed in the source 'modules' directory. Q: What should be the correct target directory prior to clicking the 'install now' button?
Thanks for the reply.

I think that mean xzm module will activated (through activate command) and moved/copied to your modules directory to be automatically activated and available for you at next boot.

Thats the basic aim of PPM. Let us know if it fails.

You can choose any directory you like as your source directory. When you first run PPM you are asked to choose a storage folder. This folder is where all resulting converted modules will land. They will not be activated automatically during boot. If you activate them using PPM then it will attempt to resolve all dependencies during activation.

Hi,
The 'test' package ended up in startup's 'Lost & Found' menu and will NOT launch. The only PPM error trapped was observed after exiting PPM:

Please post result of ls -l /opt/porteus-scripts

OK disregard the error in your image. PPM is obviously there as it runs. If the resulting package ends up in the 'lost & found' menu then it means the .desktop file in the package has no valid menu section. It would help if we knew what package you are testing. Find out the command to start it from a terminal by unpacking the package or module and looking into the bin folder. Run the executable and see what errors you get.

Dear brokenman:
Here is the Slackware 12.2 scientific/geda package in question:

Can you get Porteus to recognize it?

It's strange.

Run this command and tell us if that ran correctly PPM.

Code: Select all

/opt/porteus-scripts/porteus-package-manager
Does this error is still happening ?

Dear Hamza:
Perhaps, but the Slack package is missing these dependencies! PPM tries unsuccessfully to locate them, which leaves PPM HUNG and your patch cannot be verified??

Where can the dependencies be hiding?

PS. During this experiment, the intermittant sound problem, now functions ok??

Perhaps, this may helps you in resolving your missings module deps.

Code: Select all

slackyd -u && slackyd -g libgeda libstroke && installpkg /var/slackyd/lib[geda|stroke]*.txz

Dear Hamza:

I will have to sneek-up on this problem! After reboot, Porteus' audio became non-functional/intermittant, where the sound card DEFAUTs to the blacklisted one??

Your patch does have the green light at this point, but could you tell me the directory, where the download ended up? I would like to view the TXT files:
