how do I make XFCE porteus stop auto loading X at boot?

I would like to boot into just the command prompt but I can't figure out how.

I tried removing all the xfce boot codes but that didn't seem to change anything at all.

thanks!

use the cheatcode for 'text mode', which is 'autoexec=telinit~3' (see /boot/porteus.cfg or /boot/syslinux/liloinst.sh for examples of how this cheatcode is used to boot to text mode when it is selected from the bootloader menu).

By default, porteus boots into init 4, which kicks off '/etc/rc.d/rc.4'. In conjunction with rc.M (which does the configuration part of sorting out which desktop to load), this script does its best to always load the user to a gui. It's worth noting that this is a difference from the standard 'linux-live' scripts that slax and many other live distros use. Slax boots to init 3 by default, and you have to use cheatcodes ('autoexec=telinit~4') to get into a gui.

That's a lot of words for a simple solution :)
