Hi,

This newbie to Linux has Porteus version 1.1 booting without problems from a Windows 98SE C: drive with a grub menu.1st entry I came across on the internet; I have an old computer with 512 MB RAM, AMD Athlon Processor 1250 MHz

Having downloaded Porteus version 1.2 Xfce, I tried to apply the same menu.1st entry without luck. I boot fine from the CD I burnt but after copying the 2 folders and making a new entry to menu.1st just like I did with version 1.1, it enters the GUI and freezes. The screen boot-up message flashes by but I can read something like "Fatal error, could not open lib/modules/318-porteus/modules.dep.temp". I've gone over the cheat codes, tried different changes, and still don't see why version 1.1 works and 1.2 doesn't.

My menu.1st entries are as follows:

title porteus 1.1
kernel (hd0,0)/porteus/boot/vmlinuz from_dev=/dev/sda1 from_dir=porteus/porteus root=/dev/ram0 rw toroot autoexec=xconf;telinit~4 max_loop=256
initrd=(hd0,0)/porteus/boot/initrd.xz
boot
title porteus v1.2
kernel (hd0,0)/porteus/boot/vmlinuz from_dev=/dev/sda1 from_dir=porteus12/porteus noswap acpi=off max_loop=150
initrd=(hd0,0)/porteus12/boot/initrd.xz
boot

Any advice?

hello Sagittarius,

please fix a typo in your config:

Code: Select all

title porteus v1.2
kernel (hd0,0)/porteus/boot/vmlinuz
-->

Code: Select all

title porteus v1.2
kernel (hd0,0)/porteus12/boot/vmlinuz
:wink:
