I don't know if this real of if its me...
Do someone knows if the size of the usb key creates problems if it is too small?

I built two different keys: one is a 4GB and a second is 2GB.
Both have the same setup :
  • 1st partition is fat32
    • size is 34MB
    • it holds /boot and /efi folders
    • it is label BOOT
  • 2nd partition is ext4
    • size is the remaining space of the key so around 3GB and 1GB
    • it hols /porteus folder
    • it is labeled MAIN
I use the cheatcode

Code: Select all

from=LABEL:MAIN
. It has always worked previously.
When I try to boot with either of the small keys, I get and error message saying the "from= cheatcode is incorrect"

I reformated another key just to be sure, it is 16GB. Same setup, same cheatcode, and this one works...

My guess would be you've formatted the small drives wrong.

Ok. :good: Then why do you need the from= cheatcode?? :%)

You can try changing the from= cheatcodes to use the drive's UUID code rather than the drive's label. from=UUID:....

from=UUID: is not working either.
I formatted a 16GB key from the same company, same model, same setup, and it works.
So there is really something about the size of the USB key that prevents it from booting in regular mode.

Since the 16GB key works with the same setup, I think that the problem may be related to size rather than configuration

Hi Argo Navis

Have you tried them in another computer?
Or in different usb ports?

I have 2 laptops at home and it works on none of them. I will try on other computers when I get the chance. I am currently using 16gb keys, but since I plan on having many keys in circulation, it would have been a save of money for me. But it's not a big deal.

I would have suggested trying a different 2GB stick, but those must be rare to find these days... They are probably old, vintage, outdated, and yours is likely to be at the end of its life. Besides, what can you even squeeze into that size? A Firefox profile alone easily takes a 1GB these days!?

does it really need the from= cheatcode at all?
without it, it should just search for the porteus*.cfg file.

A rather late addition to this Topic, but for others who may see this, Porteus runs just fine from 2G and 4G gigsticks with the default config file written by the installer. No "from=" cheat code is used in the default config file.
The 2G stick is pretty cramped - theres barely room for a half-dozen app modules.
