Hello!
I'ma total newbie here, with Porteus, and mostly with Linux.
I installed Porteus 5.0 on a usb stick, I am booting on a Intel Gram laptop, it boots fine, but it doesn't connect to the internet.
In the Settings, I see a "Network" option, but there is only something about a VPN, nothing about wifi or other network access.
Do I have to manually mount the wifi chip?
I ran the -lspci command in terminal and got this line that seemed relevant:

00:14.3 Network controller: Intel Corporation Device 51f0 (rev 01)

Any idea how I can get access to wifi? :%)

Hi Argo Navis.
Can you replace kernel to 6.6.18 from this tarboll ? 64bit-ALL-kernel6.6.18.tar

Code: Select all

# All operations must be done as root user!

# replace 000-kernel.xzm
# remove crippled_sources.xzm
# optionally add 06-crippled_sources-NNN-XXbit.xzm
/path-to/porteus/base

# replace vmlinuz
/path-to/boot/syslinux

# reboot Porteus

Ok, I managed to do the replacements.
Now when I boot, I see a "Wifi" option in Settings, but it says there is "No Wi-Fi Adapter Found". And then if I close "Settings" or click another option, the Wi-Fi menu option actually disappears and doesn't come back, unless I reboot in "Always Fresh" mode.

Hi Argo Navis,

Thank you, it seems to have solved my connection problems.
I was not sure at first, because my install started acting real buggy after I tried your fix, but it seems it is from another source, something related with the savefile causing hanging during booting. I don't know why, but it seems my computer doesn't like Porteus.
Anyway, thanks again, when I am in Always Fresh, I can connect to the internet fine now. :worship:

That implies one, or more, of your changes is the problem or one or more of your modules is the problem. Start with AF and gradually add a module into the booting process one by one then your changes. It will help pin point the problem.

Hi Argo Navis.
Awesome. I need current logs from you :)

Can you open terminal and run these commands again

Code: Select all

su
toor
dmesg | egrep -i 'rtl|intel|net|broadcom|wlan|firmware|b43|phy|bcm|fw|wl|error|faile|warn|issue|resolve|found|bug|loaded'
and of course share it in this topic?

Thanks.

That was not easy because the mouse is not working and the keyboard mapping is changed too, so the keyboard shortcuts are out of whack.
I'm using UFEI in BIOS and the usb is FAT32.

Sorry, I'm posting in two different thread about this, but I just wanted to indicate I solved my problem by changing the way I enter the path to my savefile in porteus.cfg.
Thank you for your help.

On another note, is it common to have troubles with the drivers like I did? The reason I ask is because I want to use Porteus in my classroom with computers brought by my students. They will have all manners of different builds, so it would be kind of a deal breaker if I have to manage everyone like had to with my build. Is it just the Intel machines, or the Broadcom hardware, as I have read many posts about them?

Download or create some driver modules and bring them with you to class. If a student has a problem, find out what driver they are missing and copy the appropiate one to their /porteus/modules folder. Use Blaze's code to test their system.

dmesg | egrep -i 'rtl|intel|net|broadcom|wlan|firmware|b43|phy|bcm|fw|wl|error|faile|warn|issue|resolve|found|bug|loaded'
And to make it easier for you you should make Blaze's code a bash script on your Porteus system that you can copy to their system that is having problems and run it.

This should work for you:

debug.sh

Code: Select all

#!/bin/sh

if [ `whoami` != "root" ]; then
   echo -e "Enter root's password\033[1;31m"
   su -c "sh $0 $1 $2"; exit
fi
echo -e "\033[0m"; echo -en "\033]0;Searching for the problem\a"

dmesg | egrep -i 'rtl|intel|net|broadcom|wlan|firmware|b43|phy|bcm|fw|wl|error|faile|warn|issue|resolve|found|bug|loaded'
read
Save it on your system and make it executable. :)

Wow! that is super nice of you!
I'm turbo-learning all this, it's a bit overwhelming, but it is great to see the community is so active and supportive.

Is there a repository for drivers? I can't find anything on porteus.org.

Drivers? What is kind of devices?
