Isolinux is the bootloader for porteus live CD's. Syslinux and Extlinux are included in 1.1 as well by default, but Syslinux has been dropped from 1.2 as Extlinux provides the same functionality on more filesystems. Lilo is also included by default as it can boot off any filesystem.

Grub and grub4dos can also be used, but I don't think they are in the repo. There's a howto for installing grub on a flash drive here: http://porteus.org/info/docs/43-boot-lo ... drive.html

I imagine grub2 would work with Porteus as well, but I've never tried it, to be honest.

Is there another bootloader you'd like to try?

no, since I'm a very linux newbie grub2 is more than enough for me  but lilo is somewhat simple and a good choice, indeed
