The Windows hard disk (sda4) cannot be used

Post#16 by wread » 24 Sep 2022, 20:55

@roro
You have to turn off Windows properly...
I use W for one program only: acad; to shut down the machine I select an application that shows an icon with a hut in the taskbar. To shut down the first click ask "confirm?" and the second click shuts down leaving sda4 writable.

Try it!
Porteus is proud of the FASTEST KDE ever made.....(take akonadi, nepomuk and soprano out and you will have a decent OS).

There was a power outage while booting windows.
The result: the problem reappeared
Ed_P's method didn't work this time.
I tried it twice.
And now?
Is there a way to make the NTFS filesystem rewritable from Porteus?
Thanks

That's a bad combination.

No, there is not. :(

The best Linux distribution for fixing Windows issues is Knoppix. But you should run it either from CD / DVD or copied on a USB drive, like with Porteus. It is explicitly not meant as OS to be installed like any regular Linux. Like Porteus, it is meant as Live-Linux.

For your purpose the newest Knoppix CD ISO would suffice, the DVD just adds stuff like office or sound you not really need. You also not need or want the ADRIANE_KNOPPIX variant.

English info here http://knopper.net/knoppix/index-en.html

Mirrors for the most recent Knoppix (=Knoppix 9.1) here: http://knopper.net/knoppix-mirrors/index-en.html

Choose the marked "*) recommended master site for mirrors" if they work for you. And like I said, choose Knoppix 9.1 CD-ISO.

And on each Knoppix mirror there should be these sub-folders
knoppix/docs/HOWTO-burn/
knoppix/docs/knoppix_tutorial/english/

At least the one I checked has these sub-folders. I checked this mirror for your convenience:
http://knopper.net/knoppix-mirrors/down ... rs/knoppix

Last but not least its forum: http://knoppix.net/forum/

Maybe you start by asking your above question on the Knoppix forum. And only then download Knoppix and try fixing your issue with if when the users on there confirm it can be done with Knoppix.
The users there are more knowledgable with what Knoppix can do and what it can't do than me. You can add the URL to the thread you created there into here so we see if it was helpful directing you to another Linux distro. (I hope it is…)

HTH.
Cheers!

Hi Rava,

it is very simple:

Performing a full shutdown of Windows will allow the drives to be fully mounted by Ubuntu.
This can be accomplished by holding the SHIFT key as you press the "Shut down" button on the "Power" menu.

And it should even take less time, because you not need to power up W. to chkdsk the drive, but you shut down the system properly - and you wanted to boot into Linux anyway, so first having the need to startup W is counter-productive.

I read on the link that you provided that the issue happens with newer W. versions because they reset the default behaviour, making it some kind of hybrid-suspend, thus not clearly umounting and closing the journal of at least one partition.
Cheers!

Hi roro!
you have to shut down windows correctly:
you have to click the application that shows a hut in the app bar two times, the first time it shows a notification "confirm?", then click once more and windos it total down. Nur so you can access to /mnt/sda4.

That is the way I do it!

Good Luck!

For me the problem occurs with battery operated systems running Windows 10 or 11 and the battery dies when the system is in hibernation mode. Plug the system in, wait a couple of minutes, boot to Windows, shutdown Windows and reboot to whatever system you want.

For people with plugged in systems the problem could be the result of power failures, like those caused by Ian.
