Porteus-XFCE-v5.0-i586

Post#1 by yasirqadhi210 » 03 Sep 2022, 10:55

Assalamualaikum.

I downloaded Porteus-XFCE-v5.0-i586.iso and used Rufus to create my first bootable USB flash drive.

I inserted this USB flash drive into my Windows 7 Starter PC and it booted up into Porteus Linux
but I got this error message:

failed to load com32 file vesamenu.c32

I checked using winmd5 and there is no errors in download.

What is wrong?

hi when you have this message click on tab key and you have the option to boot but only text mode is an issue with vesamenu.c32

yasirqadhi210, is there a reason why you not use the Porteus script to create the USB setup incl. its boot sector?
Cheers!

How do I go about using the Porteus script? Please kindly explain as I am new to Porteus. Where do I find it
on my USB flash drive?

Thank you.

I tried and used the path /boot/syslinux/vesamenu.c32 and the Linux menu loads up. I think this is a temporary problem as I need to enter/boot/syslinux/vesamenu.c32 everytime I boot into Porteus. But for now, I am happy I have already entered Porteus GUI and
I can surf this forum using Linux instead of Windows.

Thank you for helping me.

You have to extract the contents of the Porteus ISO while keeping the hierarchy it contains.

As example, I used mloop to mount the Porteus-XFCE-v5.0-x86_64.iso - when you use Windoze you might have to install a program that can open and extract an ISO - some GUI managers for compression programs (like ZIP, RAR, 7z…) can handle ISOs as well, but not all.

The main hierarchy is this:

Code: Select all

Your image has been mounted at:
/mnt/loop

You can unmount it by typing uloop

Here is a list of the files:
EFI USB_INSTALLATION.txt boot porteus
or as seen via ls:

Code: Select all

root@porteus:/mnt/loop# ls -o
drwxr-xr-x 3 root 2048 2020-05-04 21:12 EFI
-r--r--r-- 1 root 1512 2019-11-17 03:32 USB_INSTALLATION.txt
dr-xr-xr-x 4 root 2048 2021-06-02 05:57 boot
dr-xr-xr-x 6 root 2048 2021-07-03 08:50 porteus
Just copy all these files and folders onto your USB thumbdrive, e.g. onto /mnt/sdc1/ when /mnt/sdc1 is your USB thumbdrive

The script to run is in here:

Code: Select all

root@porteus:/mnt/loop# ls -o boot/
total 574
-r-xr-xr-x 1 root 384374 2022-05-09 10:52 Porteus-installer-for-Linux.com
-r-xr-xr-x 1 root 192745 2022-05-08 07:49 Porteus-installer-for-Windows.exe
dr-xr-xr-x 2 root 2048 2021-06-14 10:27 docs
dr-xr-xr-x 2 root 4096 2022-07-02 14:41 syslinux
After you copied it all execute "Porteus-installer-for-Windows.exe" - make sure the drive the script mentions is really the one of your USB thumbdrive.

Also, make sure when you mount the ISO in any way, not use the Porteus-installer-for-* from the mounted ISO, only use the Porteus-installer-for-* after you copied it onto your USB thumbdrive.

When someone does the same using any kind of Linux, execute Porteus-installer-for-Linux.com instead.
Cheers!
Yours Rava

Thank you as you have solved my problem. I ran Porteus-installer-for-Windows.exe and now, Porteus boot menu appears
and Porteus GUI appears. Very nice.
