Hi,
I'm running porteus v4 from an USB stick on an old 32bit netbook (Intel ATOM CPU). My experince with Porteus is very basic, I like it esp for that netbook.
Since v5 is available now I wonder if there is a nice way to upgrade v4 to v5 without strating from scratch. Well maybe I *should* start from scratch, but I wonder how I should proceed if I wanted to upgrade.
I tried backing up the entire USB drive then replace basically everything from the v5 iso, making some changes to the v5 .cfg file and copy over my porteussave.dat file, then boot to porteus. But it stopped right at the beginning due to some syslinux error (I can retry if the exact message is helpful here).
Then I ran the Linux installer script from a different distro. But that didn't work either, script told me it couldn't find /boot/syslinux/lilo.menu and stopped there and told to ask here at the forum
Any ideas?

Backing up the USB drive is a good way to start. I suspect the syslinux error is due to your .cfg file changes or something in your save.dat file but it could also be due to a driver error. Try booting in the Always Fresh mode, that eliminates the error being something you did.

Thx, I'll try that. Apart from that I start to believe that something is broken in my v4 installation anyways so I'm considering setting up v5 from scratch. Before I do so: is there any chance to extract stuff from my save.dat file?

If you copy your v4 save.dat file to v5 and rename it as save.dat.xzm you should then be able to open it in v5 with xzm2dir.

I'll probably try that. On the other hand, I maybe don't need that anyways, maybe even a better idea to start from scratch.
