Which Desktop for daily student use

Post#1 by 32rats » 21 Jul 2022, 21:01

I apologize in advance if this has already been asked, I couldn't find a source in this forum or elsewhere that has simply explained the differences between the desktops.

What would be the best desktop for a engineering student using porteus 5.0 on the go and as a daily OS? If multiple would be good could I get a quick description of each desktop's overall experience or a link to somewhere that has it? I'm new to both Linux and portable OS, so the relatively high-level information I have been able to find feels like a mountain to research and sort through.

Thank you for any help, I really want to get into this but don't know where to start.

I'm a 76 year old man who has no clue what an "engineering student" needs. ;) Win11 Pro is my primary OS, so I like the Cinnamon DE, but use the KDE on some Linux OSes that don't offer the Cinnamon. KDE requires more work to setup, usually, IMHO. I use Porteus 5.0 Cinnamon as my main 'Working' Linux OS, and am a Newbie to it also. I'm experienced wid Linux though, so Porteus wasn't to hard for me to get it where I wanted it to be...thanks to many board members here. About 4-months...started wid Porteus 5.0-rc3 Cinnamon 'n jumped onto the recent 5.0 Cinnamon.

Thank you for the reply, I only just found out a couple hours ago that the desktops work on multiple distros which I hadn't even occured to me as a possibility. That helped a lot to look through, and ill take a deeper dive into Cinnamon DE and KDE. I really appreciate your advice!

I am a 77 year old "whitebeard" and my personal Porteus favorite is XFCE.
For the moment I would recommend you to try all flavors and keep what you like.
Later on when you know more about your requirements you can make a more "targeted" decision about your Linux distribution(s) and desktop environment(s).
You should have a look at https://distrowatch.com/ for a wealth of information.

I used to call a group of coworkers "the silverbacks"...

Apart from 32rats, is there anyone under 50 here? :D
