from what i've seen of the .img format, is that while their simpler to install for those who don't want to bother with partitioning and so on, they're slightly more cumbersome for those who don't want the prepackaged approach..
and once you've understood the nature of the frugal install, life's so much simpler..
For Porteus I agree with this. For the several other persistent distros I've tried, the ISO format seems to just be an inconvenient legacy - for anyone who doesn't know how to write the boot sector for the loader (Porteus makes this easy) unpacking the ISO is no good at all.
I mean, you already have to install a burner app of some sort to burn the ISO to a stick. Back when I used to use Windows, it was easy to find a similar app for writing IMG files. These days, I am so used to having Gparted at hand in every single OS I run, that it seems easy to burn an IMG.
I guess for anyone still trying to wean off Windows, thats not as easy.

I have no problem booting the ISOs directly. I use Grub2Win now days but I've been booting ISO since Windows 7 days, and I think maybe even Windows XP, using GRUB4DOS.

hi, in my opinion you are wrong in your approach with the iso format, you don't have to burn anything unless you use an installer, for windows, you unpack the iso with an archive manager and copy it onto the usb key, then you can use the tool to install syslinux, If you want some apps, unpack the iso using mksquashfs, make all the packages you need, put them in the packages directory and use the make.iso.sh script to redo the iso or copy directly to the USB key

With Porteus one creates xzm modules and puts them in the Porteus modules folder. No unpacking, repacking necessary. :Yahoo!:
