USM mirror problem

After installation to the flash drive (its a current Porteus 4 LXDE install), I couldn't install software in USM - it wouldn't find anything, not even firefox. I tried updating mirrors but it would either just open a terminal window with nothing executing in it or throw me different errors.
How can I fix that?

When you started USM did you click on the Updates > Update All option?

I did, but not immediately: first I tried updating them separately

Ok, so did the USM mirrors all update at this point? And if not which ones didn't.

Uninstalled the usm module I had installed, updated all, all okay now
