Porteus Superfly, V 0.2 (pre-alpha) is out!
Hi All,
As some of you may have heard, I've been working on a light(er) weight version of porteus. This is primarily a sandbox for me to learn more about linux. However, I know there are some folks who have been looking to trim porteus down, eliminate KDE, etc. So, perhaps my efforts here will be of some use.

INFO:
Superfly uses a different X-server than regular Porteus. It uses Xvesa, a tiny, standalone X-server that can be used on almost any hardware. The downside is that Xvesa has no graphics accelleration, so movement is choppy at times. In future versions, I hope to create a lightweight xorg-server, which will greatly improve the look and feel of Superfly.
Superfly comes with two "default" resolutions. One is for 4:3 format monitors (1024x768). The other is for widescreen monitors (1280x800). You can specify other resolutions with the "xvesa" cheatcode. You need to press tab at the SYSLINUX menu, and add (or modify) the cheatcode, using your desired resolution and color depth. For example, 'xvesa=800x600x8' would give you an 800x600 pixel screen with 8-bit color depth. Higher resolutions and color depths will look better, but may not work on older hardware. You can enter "Xvesa -listmodes" into a console to see the other modes that this version of Xvesa can use. The highest supported resolution for 4:3 is 1280x1024x24, and for widescreen, it is 1680x1050x24.
Superfly uses Openbox with fbpanel, wmsetbg (to set the wallpaper), and slim (login manager). Many thanks to crashman, as I stole most of this setup from his tiny-desktop module.
It also has the following applications:
pcman (file manager)
xterm
aterm
leafpad
Beaver code editor
Xarchiver
gpicview
Xpaint
Xpdf
alsaplayer
midori web broswer + flashplayer
Take a look and let me know your thoughts. More than once, I have felt that this project has little merit, because Porteus is already so lightweight, and several other distros exist that are lighter than what I've created, with greater functionality. At this point, it remains my sandbox, but I'll continue developing it if others are interested. That said, all efforts should first go towards the official versions of Porteus and getting them ready for V1.0 final.
I'd to thank crashman (again), fanthom and brokenman, as well as the developers of Slitaz (a couple of the applications, such as midori, have been ported from Slitaz).
Future goals include:
adding a lightweight xorg server, mplayer, and some cd recording software; importing some or all of the porteus-specific applications, such as xpns-tool, porteus-module-tools, etc. (these don't work yet in superfly, and have been removed -- command line tools do work), and cleaning up the countless bugs that I'm sure will crop up.
This software should be considered highly experimental, and not used for important or sensitive work. It is not part of the official porteus project, and I expect that it will remain unofficial.
Thanks, all!

I really can't wait till I get home to try this out.
Sorry guys... I got to go. My girlfriend just casted "get your dirty ass into the shower" on me.
Oh and here is some naked grandpa pictures too.

looks good
few small issues which i have found during testing:
- mouse wheel doesnt work for me
- 4 virtual desktops, 2 could be enough (it's my preferences only)
- mc shows letters instead of lines in Xvesa (works ok in text mode)
- /boot/porteus.cfg has saved copy /boot/porteus.cfg~ (have seen also one in /var/log/packages)
- wrong permissions in /boot and /porteus - all files has 777
- spotted some guest perms (1000:1000) in /etc/xdg/....
- 002-Xlibs has copy of dir2xzm script in /bin
- "lock Display" feature doesnt work saying: "failed to execute 'slock' missing file"
- i'm short of entries for porteus tools like pns-tool
- pxe boot could be added to porteus.cfg
overall - nice done

Re: Porteus Superfly, V 0.2 (pre-alpha) is out!
Thanks!
I think the mousewheel can be fixed with some changes to Xvesa's configuration. I'll look into it and get an update out.
The permissions issues you see are a result of me saving files to rootcopy in my FAT-formatted flash drive, then copying back into the modules, I'll clean that up.
002-Xlibs has a number of items from /bin that should be in 001-core. This is an error in 32-bit beta, and I should have merged one of my modules into 001 instead of 002. Will be fixed in next version (it will also reduce the .iso size a little bit).
I'll also look into slock. whether or not I implement it will depend on how big it is (with any dependencies).
pns-tool is installed for use on the command line, but the graphical versions don't work in Xvesa, so I removed the .desktop entries from /usr/share/applications. I plan on tracking down whatever is needed for getting "xdialog" to work, and implementing it in the next release.
I'll add a pxe option to the .cfg file, and see if I can test it out.
Thank you very much!!!

I am still trying to work out a problem on my laptop. I use the cheatcode from_iso=/psf.iso and have also tried from_dir=/psf/.
Seems to boot fine, but locks up when xvesa starts. I am gona double check some things, and get back to you. also tried changing resolution 800x600x16 still same problem.

Maybe it is this craptastic ati mobility video card.

I think your graphics card is not the likely culprit (but I could be wrong). You could try hitting ctrl-alt-F6, logging in to the CLI, and then check the contents of /var/log/slim.log, which should catch the errors coming out of Xvesa.
The more likely culprit is the kernel and initrd you're using, and/or your cheatcodes. Could you give me the KERNEL and APPEND lines from the porteus.cfg entry you're using, as well as the relevant layout of your drive (e.g., kernel and initrd are in /boot/, iso is in /psf/psf.iso). If your kernel and initrd entries are pointing to /boot/vmlinuz and /boot/initrd.xz, and those are from a 64-bit porteus install, you won't be able to boot up the superfly iso (it will try to use the 64-bit kernel to boot a 32-bit system). If that is the case, then try mounting the superfly iso and copying the /boot/ directory and it's contents to /psf/boot/, and edit your porteus.cfg entry to be KERNEL=/psf/boot/vmlinuz, initrd=/psf/boot/initrd.xz, and from_iso=/psf/psf.iso (or whatever you'ved named the iso). That way, you don't have to reinstall SYSLINUX, and you can still point it to the 32-bit kernel and initrd. This same approach could be used for extracting the full contents of the .iso to /psf/boot/ and /psf/porteus/, using the from_dir=/psf/porteus cheatcode together with the kernel and initrd entries above, and being able to run two porteus installs from the same USB device (or frugal hard drive install).
Also, from_iso and from_dir needn't (shouldn't?) be used together. If your iso is in a subdirectory, you can use from_iso=/psf/psf.iso, or from_iso=/mnt/sdXY/psf/psf.iso.
Let me know if that helps at all...if all else fails, you could burn the .iso to a CD and see if it works properly from that.
Thanks again for testing!

@issa82
"[drm:r600_startup] *ERROR* Failed to load firmware!"
you have an Ati card and kernel is trying to enable KMS (ati cards needs firmware). Xvesa used in Superfly doesn't use/need KMS so i would suggest adding 'nomodeset' to porteus.cfg in all booting options.

Ahh, thank you, fanthom!
I blacklisted nouveau, but forgot about the other KMS drivers.
Sorry, 82issa, and others with ATI boards!

Re: Porteus Superfly, V 0.2 (pre-alpha) is out!
May be I'm missing something (probably??) but what exactly is the point of "Superfly"?
Why not just run Slitaz through Linux Live and call it... something. (Took about 2 hours, including creating 400+ modules. It works perfectly fine.)

Re: Porteus Superfly, V 0.2 (pre-alpha) is out!
thanks, pizzar0!
The main point of Superfly was for me to learn more about linux, and it has served that purpose quite well
You're right, running Slitaz this way would be great (better than superfly, unless one was a die-hard slackware fan...and even then...).
The most likely outcome of my experiment is a (far in the future) module of low-RAM applications, for use in conjunction with crashman's "tiny desktop" project. This would allow users to strip all of the modules form porteus except 000, 001, and 002, then install tiny-desktop and superfly-apps (or whatever I choose to call it) and have something that is porteus-compatible that uses under 100MB of RAM.
The main point of Superfly was for me to learn more about linux, and it has served that purpose quite well

Re: Porteus Superfly, V 0.2 (pre-alpha) is out!
Welcome, Wkb58hot!
I'm glad you like porteus-superfly! As you can see from posts earlier in this thread, I've not really updated or maintained it for the last couple of years.
For your wifi issues: first, I would try booting without saved changes (so none of your previous modifications can influence the test) and running 'pns-tool' from the command line to try setting up your wifi that way. If that fails as well, try running 'psinfo' and post the report on pastebin.com with a link here and I'll take a look.
That said, it's doubtful at this point that I'll resurrect superfly in way similar to what it was. I wasn't very happy with the performance of Xvesa, and I didn't get it small enough to warrant using Xvesa over a more modern X.org server. What is it that you like about it? The openbox/tint2 interface, or does Xvesa actually work better on your hardware than the standard porteus edition?
I could forsee, for example, building an openbox module that would run on standard porteus. That would be more sustainable and have a broader appeal, in my opinion.

Are you thinking of a openbox module for porteus 2.0?
