Kernel 3.1.1 for Porteus v1.1rc1 i486 ready!

Here is a place for your projects which are not officially supported by the Porteus Team. For example: your own kernel patched with extra features; desktops not included in the standard ISO like Gnome; base modules that are different than the standard ISO, etc...

Very Useful!
This topic should be in Development section.
All modules you have made are related to an "unstable" version of Porteus (32bit Edition)
That is why you need to put this topic in Development instead of i486 xzm modules.

The development section is right place where you need to put all these wonderful stuffs!

Thank you.

Hi Hamza,
I'm very sorry for this! You're really right about this.
I hope that someone with "admin-rights" moves this topic to Development section.

@kalo86
what about creating a separate thread (or even subsection) in "Community efforts" where you could post your updated kernels?
i would prefer keeping them in one place so users could find them easily.

btw: could you give short description (and/or download link) to patches used in your kernel (except of aufs of course)?
i dont want to pull many external patches which may bring extra risk of loosing stability but some could be useful in official release.
for example we are going to add to Porteus-1.1 aspm-rework patch described here:
http://www.phoronix.com/scan.php?page=a ... tion&num=1

Cheers
Please add [Solved] to your thread title if the solution was found.

I patched the kernel with those other two patches for a good/best compatibility of wireless drivers with the Aircrack-ng suite, the pentesting security tools for wireless networks.
With these two patches, me and other people don't have to patch and compile the compat-wireless package, which goal is to create a new module for the own wireless card, then avoid to create a duplicate of the same module on the kernel. For this reason I have always compiled the compat-wireless with these two patches, and the installation create an "update" folder containing the compiled new wireless modules.
By the way I repute that these patches don't make system unstable and I am getting better performance than the compiled compat-wireless driver (in my case the Atheros ath9k driver).

Patches can be downloaded here:
http://patches.aircrack-ng.org/

Great news about ASPM patch, I'm going to compile and test a new 3.1.1 kernel, thanks!

Regards

AirCrack-ng is a nice tool to test your own wireless network's security but when someone is trying to find out your wireless key using this tool you will not like it. :)

That's interesting.
Aircrack drivers provide additional (sometimes very valuable) functionality, for example my rtl8187L with standard drivers can't switch to ad-hoc and AP mode and I heard that with it's possible with some of these patches (although I only see patches for 2.6.xx there).
I think I'll try to compile kernel with these patches once Porteus x86_64 1.1 will be released...
Suggestions/corrections/additions are always welcome.

@kalo86
i see a way too many patches in that folder so gonna stick to vanilla kernel in this case.
thanks for the info.

I am not a kernel enthusiast, but the new kernel in v1.0-rc2-i486 (v-3.1.1) works ok in Porteus Trinity.
However I made a 32-bit KDE 4.7.4 set of modules and running with this kernel I get crashes every 5 minutes (firefox and dolphi crashes). IMHO we are ahead of Slackware in what kernels concern. I read the next KDE4 will jump to version 4.8, it is out as beta version, I think.

Or is the unsatability due to the kernel, or many applications must be compiled anew with the new tools....

Regards!
Porteus is proud of the FASTEST KDE ever made.....(take akonadi, nepomuk and soprano out and you will have a decent OS).
The Porteus Community never sleeps!

@ wread

Hi,
probably you have the same problem which I have with my new Acer Aspire One 522 netbook.
This netbook has the AMD Fusion APU C-50 and I have a lot of freezes whit 3.0.X and 3.1.X kernels.
Yesterday I compiled the 3.1.5 linux kernel and I am not having any freeze.
I am going to upload the modules and open a new topic.
Regards,

kalo86

Did you used the same config as "Porteus Kernel Config" ?

Yes Hamza, I used the same config.
I had freezes with 3.1.1, 3.1.2, 3.1.4.
Still today I have zero freezes with 3.1.5 kernel.

The new topic about 3.1.5-porteus kernel is here:

Ok, Thanks.
Did you used the same patch source as Porteus v1.1 rc's ?
If Not, We can solve the problem by using a newer version of the patch.
