SAM Linux Portable (DE, EN, ES, FR, RU)

Hi everyone,

my name is Nico, I am from Germany and a few years ago I was the creator of the SAM Linux distro (based on Mandrake - Mandriva - PCLinuxOS). After discovering Porteus a few weeks ago and falling i love with the concept and tools I thought I give it a shot and recreate a SAM Linux variant based on the latest XFce-Porteus 4. :thumbsup:

It´s targeted to "normal" home users providing a beautiful desktop with standard applications like the latest OpenOffice, the latest Gimp, a handful of multimedia apps, some games, the Seamonkey suite for internet usage and then some...

SAM comes with support for 5 languages out of the box (localisation of the system, desktop, Office Suite and Seamonkey apps): DE (german), FR (french), ES (spanish), EN (US english) and RU (russian).

Right now my goal was to limit the size to a max of 700mb, so it can run from a CD drive - for older systems without USB support, but should mainly used as a portable USB system where you can add additional modules like the printing or development modules.

If you want to try it you can download the latest test iso here:

https://sourceforge.net/projects/sam-linux/

A few more words about how and why you can read on the blog section at the sourceforge project page.

Please let me know what you think about it and what could be better!

Thank you for your interest and have fun! :pulpfiction:

SAM-Nico

PS: press "F12" on the desktop for the beautiful Tilda!

Changelog:

04/23/2019: SAM-portable_P4test4.iso

Changelog:

- added new language support: russian
- updated kernel to 4.19.34-x86_64
- exchanged LibreOffice with OpenOffice 4.1.6
- added Compton compositor for nice windows transition effects

There´s now around 25mb free space on the iso. Any idea how to fit a working printing module inside?

Compton compositor:

https://github.com/yshui/compton

The settings file is in ".config/compton.conf".

If you want to disable it, go into XFce settings -> Sessions and Startup -> autostart. Disable the "xCompton" entry.

Then you have to re-enable the XFce compositor in "Window Manager Tweaks".

Logout -> Login.

Done.

Have fun,
Nico

Interesting. Do Porteus modules, like 05-devel.xzm, work with your version? Does USM work with it?

Sure they do. It´s basically a customized Porteus.

What's the difference between the 05-devel.xzm file on your site and the one Porteus has?

Is the ISO you started with from neko's version or a basic Porteus version?

And will your ISO support other 03 DEs? I'm thinking jssouza's Cinnamon.

The 05-devel.xzm is the Porteus module, also the printing modules. I added them to the d/l site because they are the most missing from the iso for me right now.

I started from the basic XFce Porteus iso.

Right now I dont have any plans to add more DE's to the iso because of space limitations. But feel free to add them later once you transferred everything to your USB device.

Currently I try to shrink the iso so the basic scanning and printing support fits on the CD space. This it the most missing essential from my point of view.

@sam-nico
You can update kernel easily by replacing "vmlinux & 000-kernel.xzm"
with ones of build example kernel "64bit-kernelNNNNN.tar".

Build examples are listed up
at "[Updated kernel Example] Simple package (vmlinuz, 000-kernel.xzm, 06-crippled_sources-NNN-XXbit.xzm)"
in the article Porteus Kernel Builder (Post by neko #52232)

Thanks.

Neko, thank you for your suggestion! Which kernel version do you recommend?

@sam-nico
"Which kernel version do you recommend?"
--->
It depends on your need.
If you want the latest one challengeable, it may 5.1-rc4.
If you want the latest stable one, it may 5.0.7.

I have tested the ISO that was replaced kernel of your ISO with 5.1-rc4 one.

Thanks.

Thank you, 5.1-rc4 is running now, so far everything is fine.

I repacked the module with a higher compression rate (result: 60,4mb -> 54,6mb), I just changed the rate in the dir2xzm script, the changed script you can find here:

https://sourceforge.net/projects/sam-li ... s/scripts/

I use it for all my modules ... need more space everywhere ... :hmmm:

Ok, I switched to kernel 4.19.34 for now. With the 5.1-rc4 Thunar (filemanager) showed some strange behaviour, at first start it took several seconds to respond. Maybe a problem in filesystem access. LTS kernel should be fine.

sam-nico, rename 007 modules to 07 it will save you from many issues.
Why you don't provide Russian localization? You can take it from (iso/porteus/modules/ru-*-x86_64-?.xzm) my repo https://cloud.mail.ru/public/EGAf/daEPkdbap

Hi Blaze,
Why you don't provide Russian localization?
...because I don´ t have any space left on the CD iso. The localization includes the LibreOffice and Seamonkey locales too. But ... I´m working on it. :happy62:
