SAM Linux Portable (DE, EN, ES, FR, RU)
Posted: 12 Apr 2019, 10:30
Hi everyone,
my name is Nico, I am from Germany and a few years ago I was the creator of the SAM Linux distro (based on Mandrake - Mandriva - PCLinuxOS). After discovering Porteus a few weeks ago and falling i love with the concept and tools I thought I give it a shot and recreate a SAM Linux variant based on the latest XFce-Porteus 4.
It´s targeted to "normal" home users providing a beautiful desktop with standard applications like the latest OpenOffice, the latest Gimp, a handful of multimedia apps, some games, the Seamonkey suite for internet usage and then some...
SAM comes with support for 5 languages out of the box (localisation of the system, desktop, Office Suite and Seamonkey apps): DE (german), FR (french), ES (spanish), EN (US english) and RU (russian).
Right now my goal was to limit the size to a max of 700mb, so it can run from a CD drive - for older systems without USB support, but should mainly used as a portable USB system where you can add additional modules like the printing or development modules.
If you want to try it you can download the latest test iso here:
https://sourceforge.net/projects/sam-linux/
A few more words about how and why you can read on the blog section at the sourceforge project page.
Please let me know what you think about it and what could be better!
Thank you for your interest and have fun!
SAM-Nico
PS: press "F12" on the desktop for the beautiful Tilda!

Changelog:
04/23/2019: SAM-portable_P4test4.iso
Changelog:
- added new language support: russian
- updated kernel to 4.19.34-x86_64
- exchanged LibreOffice with OpenOffice 4.1.6
- added Compton compositor for nice windows transition effects
There´s now around 25mb free space on the iso. Any idea how to fit a working printing module inside?
Compton compositor:
https://github.com/yshui/compton
The settings file is in ".config/compton.conf".
If you want to disable it, go into XFce settings -> Sessions and Startup -> autostart. Disable the "xCompton" entry.
Then you have to re-enable the XFce compositor in "Window Manager Tweaks".
Logout -> Login.
Done.
Have fun,
Nico
