@Jack

Put any old CD, which is not a boot CD, in the drive, then boot your normal Porteus. Then do you get something like this?

Code: Select all

guest@porteus:~$ cat /var/log/porteus-livedbg
# Recognized devices:
/dev/sr0: LABEL="1. Upon Time S01" TYPE="iso9660"
...

would like to see what Porteus has to say about CD rom Drive.

Jack, can you please try this:
  1. Put CD that you know you can read (not a boot CD) in CD drive
  2. Boot up Porteus
  3. Then: cat /var/log/porteus-livedbg
  4. As root: blkid
  5. Then try to read something off CD
  6. Then: lsmod

Thanks for the info, Jack. According to what I see, even though your CDROM device is a block device, it has not been detected as a block device. Apparently there are 2 disk partitions, and a usb. Therefore would expect it to be hdb, but then your disk should be hda, which it is not. Seems reason why it is not booting, is that the system thinks your CDROM drive is not a SCSI sr0, therefore not in recognised devices list.

Will have to wait for someone the likes of Superuser Donald to come to the rescue.

OK, when you have a spare moment wil be interested to know after booting with cd in drive, lsmod, and while playing it:

Code: Select all

mount
cat /etc/fstab
cat /etc/mtab
cat /proc/self/mountinfo
lsmod

I have had my Laptop since 2008 and it work 100% all the time. I did your test with a CD and USB thumb drive and it happen the same in both. It never found 000-kernel.xzm or 001-core.xzm in both ways I did it and that the problem. As far as CDROM device is a block device I don't think so, It would not even try to boot if it was a block device.

IMHO Jack needs to insert a bootable cd so you can check stuff.

2)Also on most computers you press F8 at bios boot screen to get the bios to show you the bootable devices (not F9)
---if a bootable cd is in tray you will get an entry

I punch F8 with some vigour multiple times to ensure it does pop up as an option.

An interesting project.

I tried the abSlak_030216.iso file and got an error msg about ptest.sgn missing, and it is in the porteus directory.

As I usually do I booted the ISO directly.

Code: Select all

set ISOz=abSlak_030216.iso

title abSlak \n 316MB\n %ISOz%

FWIW On my Acers it's F2. But the Del key works on some old desktops.

First off what dose IMHO mean I see it all the time?

@aus9, on my laptop the F9 is boot option if you want to change it temporary or in my bios they are preset 1) is CD/DVD 2) USB Device 3) Hard Drive, so I don't need to hit F9 key. I can put in 10 boot able CD and they all boot up. That is not the problem here.

@Bogomips, When I burnt the CD it wasn't in UDF format. If that was the case then Porteus 3.1 Mate should not have boot up cause they both was burnt the same way.

@Bogomips, You might need to find some else to help you cause it not me or my laptop computer. Hope you don't take this wrong but if I can I'll will try and help.

NOT TO MAKE ANYONE MAD BUT THIS HOW I FEEL
I been in computer or around them for 30 years and I even built computer. I might be a dummy or smart with Linux OS but I'm not young like most of the member here. I'll be a year older next week.

Hope for the best here.

EDIT: I didn't see Ed post tell I all ready posted mind.

@Ed_P

This is my Grub Legacy menu.lst:

Code: Select all

title Alien Bob Adaptation Iso Test
root (hd0,0)
kernel /bab/vmlinuz base_only noauto from=/dev/sda10/tmp/iso/abSlak.iso
initrd /bab/initrd.img
sda10 is on an ext2 file system. Starting small so only have support for ext2, ext3,ext4 and reiserfs. also isofs for cd/dvd. Should be able to find sign file on these systems. vfat not yet sorted. So if /ISOs/%ISOz% is on an ntfs system it will not work for the moment.

If I understand you correctly, then you burnt Porteus 3.1 Mate to cd, and booted from it? If that is the case it will help to see porteus-livedbg after boot up.

In My Humble Opinion :)
