Porteus has been added to Ikki Boot

Here is a place for your projects which are not officially supported by the Porteus Team. For example: your own kernel patched with extra features; desktops not included in the standard ISO like Gnome; base modules that are different than the standard ISO, etc...

I don't think this is planned.
The software modules work with Cinnamon too in my opinion.

Quite interesting that the folks who make Ikki Boot to choose removing Puppy Linux and addind Porteus 5.0 XFCE instead.
I approve. :)

I doubt it, seems they go by the slim DE solution. Why they choose XFCE and not 003-lxde.xzm or 003-openbox.xzm to build Ikki Boot - who can say.
Both are more slim than XFCE is.

But I am okay with that choice since XFCE is also my favourite. :D

Anyhow, researching all that I stumbled upon this
Desktop environment: Examples of desktop environments
Mainstream desktop environments for Unix-like operating systems use the X Window System, and include KDE, GNOME, Xfce, LXDE, and Aqua
Since when is there a mainstream DE for Unix-like operating systems based on Apple's Aqua? :crazy:

Added in 4 hours 43 minutes 30 seconds:
downloaded the ISO, verified its md5sum and used mloop on it to look for its extra modules:

Porteus has been added to Ikki Boot

What is sure is that the LXDE version has been tested but not chosen. The wallpaper is the same as Porteux LXDE.

I think the author is already working on his next version.
I found where to get the Porteus modules without downloading the ISO.

Some of them are even more recent :celebrate3:

sadly, a simple

Code: Select all

wget -c "https://download.tuxfamily.org/ikkiboot/porteus/*xzm"
would not work. :cry:

Added in 54 minutes 56 seconds:
But

Code: Select all

wget -c --no-parent --recursive --level=1 https://download.tuxfamily.org/ikkiboot/porteus/
works.
Cave! It also recreates the hierarchy like on the server, in the above case we get this:

And just in case you prefer short parameters instead of verbose ones, this is the short equivalent:

did you find a checksums file e.g. md5sums for the files in https://download.tuxfamily.org/ikkiboot/porteus/

I wish there was an option for it to download all it does like the parameters as quoted above… but without creating the server hierarchy… but alas! seems that option doesn't exist.

Porteus has been added to Ikki Boot

Post#9 by Rava » 26 Oct 2022, 23:21

I would have chosen one settings file that contains all such settings (e.g. only one module containing "xfce-numlock+xfce-disable-screen-sleep+veracrypt-shortcut+mozilla-firefox-shortcut+keepassxc-shortcut+hardinfo-shortcut+geany-shortcut.xzm") instead of several single modules containing only one setting at a time.
Like with the below 4096 bytes for xfce-numlock.xzm - that only has 2 identical files each 210 bytes

Code: Select all

guest@porteus:/$ mloop /mybin/ISO/Ikki_Boot_porteus/xfce-numlock.xzm
 Please enter root's password below
Password:
using /dev/loop11

Please wait while I gather some info ....

 #################################
 Your module has been mounted at:
/mnt/loop

 You can unmount it by typing uloop

 Here is a list of the files:
home  root

guest@porteus:/$ ls -o /mnt/loop/home/guest/.config/xfce4/xfconf/xfce-perchannel-xml/keyboards.xml
-rw-r--r-- 1 guest 210 2022-10-17 12:11 /mnt/loop/home/guest/.config/xfce4/xfconf/xfce-perchannel-xml/keyboards.xml
guest@porteus:/$ diff /mnt/loop/home/guest/.config/xfce4/xfconf/xfce-perchannel-xml/keyboards.xml /mnt/loop/root/.config/xfce4/xfconf/xfce-perchannel-xml/keyboards.xml
guest@porteus:/$ cat /mnt/loop/home/guest/.config/xfce4/xfconf/xfce-perchannel-xml/keyboards.xml
<?xml version="1.0" encoding="UTF-8"?>

<channel name="keyboards" version="1.0">
  <property name="Default" type="empty">
    <property name="Numlock" type="bool" value="true"/>
  </property>
</channel>
with only this content

Code: Select all

<?xml version="1.0" encoding="UTF-8"?>

<channel name="keyboards" version="1.0">
  <property name="Default" type="empty">
    <property name="Numlock" type="bool" value="true"/>
  </property>
</channel>
but maybe that' just me thinking one settings-module is more efficient than 7…
Cheers!

I wish there was an option for it to download all it does like the parameters as quoted above

Code: Select all

wget -np -crl1 https://download.tuxfamily.org/ikkiboot/porteus/
works.

Code: Select all

guest@porteus:~$ ls -ohr /tmp/download.tuxfamily.org/ikkiboot/porteus
total 58M
-rw-r--r-- 1 guest 6.5K Oct 27 00:00 index.html
-rw-r--r-- 1 guest 720K Oct 27 00:07 gftp-2.8.0b-x86_64.xzm
-rw-r--r-- 1 guest 4.0K Oct 27 00:07 geany-shortcut.xzm
-rw-r--r-- 1 guest 1.5M Oct 27 00:07 geany-1.38.x86_64.xzm
-rw-r--r-- 1 guest 3.2M Oct 27 00:07 ddrescue-1.26.x86_64.xzm
-rw-r--r-- 1 guest  26M Oct 27 00:07 abiword-3.0.5.x86_64.xzm
-rw-r--r-- 1 guest  28M Oct 27 00:04 abiword-3.0.5-gnumeric-1.12.50.x86_64.xzm
And moving them from the download directory to someplace else seems easy to do.

Code: Select all

guest@porteus:~$ mv /tmp/download.tuxfamily.org/ikkiboot/porteus/* /tmp
guest@porteus:~$ ls -oh /tmp/*xzm
-rw-r--r-- 1 guest  28M Oct 27 00:04 /tmp/abiword-3.0.5-gnumeric-1.12.50.x86_64.xzm
-rw-r--r-- 1 guest  26M Oct 27 00:07 /tmp/abiword-3.0.5.x86_64.xzm
-rw-r--r-- 1 guest 3.2M Oct 27 00:07 /tmp/ddrescue-1.26.x86_64.xzm
-rw-r--r-- 1 guest 1.5M Oct 27 00:07 /tmp/geany-1.38.x86_64.xzm
-rw-r--r-- 1 guest 4.0K Oct 27 00:07 /tmp/geany-shortcut.xzm
-rw-r--r-- 1 guest 720K Oct 27 00:07 /tmp/gftp-2.8.0b-x86_64.xzm
as you showed in your code example.

as you showed in your code example.
It itches in my fingers, wanting to create a wget-recursive script that understand that e.g. --level=1 and URL containing "download.tuxfamily.org/ikkiboot/porteus/" means move all files from "download.tuxfamily.org/ikkiboot/porteus/" to "." and then remove the whole download.tuxfamily.org/ folder :D

Added in 3 minutes 3 seconds:
In my book, scripts should be there to do recurring repetitive and/or similar tasks for us.
And not us doing the recurring repetitive tasks manually each and every time.

Then again, I think someone else might have come up with the very same idea that I described above already many many moons ago… and we just have to find that finished script online. :D
Cheers!

:lol: I agree but would phrase it a bit differently.

In my book, scripts are created to do recurring repetitive and/or similar tasks for us. That's why I create them and I'm sure why you do also. :)

Great wget script but the modules have been moved to sourceforge :wall:
https://sourceforge.net/projects/ikkibo ... s/porteus/
At least not all

For the modules an optimization has already been done if you look at abiword and gnumeric on the ISO there were 11 modules and now only one.

On my side I like to have the shortcuts in different xzm files. I have Firefox and the desktop shortcut. I don't need any other xzm, the other shortcuts are not useful to me.

I think the goal is both to give modules for those who like to create their own Porteus and to allow Ikki Boot users to enjoy the modules effortlessly. It's hard to combine the two in my opinion.

You are correct, there is no way in appeasing both approaches.

And I think most likely the folks who want it more optimized (like me) are most likely all able to create one single settings module out of the several tiny 4k ones if they want to - than the ones only wanting one or two programs and their corresponding settings.
This way everyone can get happy - albeit includes some minor work for the picky with efficiency folks. Like me. :D

:wall: indeed, I hate only downloads via sourceforge.net since you cannot easily direct wget to it and get one command doing several downloads automatically for you.
SF.net used to be a fine site, like, 140 years ago (only slightly exaggerating there, LOL </irony>), but then they started to suck. And they still suck. Image

Salut Julien.
