darn. Did you reach out to the dev?
https://sourceforge.net/u/userid-1492391/profile/
it's in alpha, last updated 2007!

could this work? you're more expert than me. No idea if this can help.

xinitrc and startx
Log in to Linux desktop without a display manager with xinitrc and startx
https://www.techtimejourney.net/log-in- ... in-action/
Have a look at the .xinitrc file in your home directory. You should be able to specify there which desktop environment you want as default (via startx).

start xfce.
RE: startx -> XFCE, as selected by a link
/etc/X11/xinit/xinitc -> /etc/X11/xinit/xinitrc.xfce

Have you cleared ~/.cache/sessions? I usually just purge the whole folder when I have xfce issues. Maybe back it up first...

run "xfwm4" in the terminal for window decorations(substitute your window manager if you are not using xfce).

is login screen the only eye-candy you mean?
which of these would work? Xephyr or xinit/startx, or both?
would this mean i can run xfce (all components) without xorg?

Are you saving your changes to a save.dat file? If you use changes=EXIT: press any key other than space or Enter when shutting down/rebooting. It stops changes from being saved. :happy62:

i know, and i have been feeling bad about hijacking. I will make a separate thread for my separate issue, and i'll remove the unrelated posts from here.

thx, happy to participate!

i want to see if i can get xfce to idle under 100 MB B)
Mainly in interest of low-resource hardware and limited RAM.
Porteus is already one of the smallest xfce linux's -- why not take it further?
I love puppy linux xtahr, but not real linux-- too hobbyish, unreliable repos, etc. But maybe some lessons to learn from puppy.

i noticed xorg doesn't seem to be running on Porteus 32-bit, correct? I'm idling at at 170 MB.
Seems no sense running 64-bit on 2 GB ram.
