Here you can post about non-standard installation methods
(for example when using grub4dos).

running porteus in a virtual box in windows

Post#1 by benmayim » 15 May 2012, 06:31

Just wanted to say hello, and that I'm having no luck with searching forums. all the search words I use are rejected, and I can't manually find this topic.

I've got porteus as guest running in a Sun systems virtualbox on win7 host system, and in an ubuntu host, but can't get 'guest additions' installed in the porteus virtual box. Anyone know how to do this?

It would help to know which version you are using.

Essentially just download the vbox-guest module and place it into your module folder in porteus, then reboot. You can find the vbox guest additions for the 'current' porteus here.

Hello!
The vbox-guest-4.2.6-porteus-v2.0-i486-1ftm.xzm module doesn't seem to work with the Virtualbox version 4.2.10, or am I doing something wrong?
I installed Porteus with the "Porteus Installer" and copied the module into the modules folder as root. The Package Manager tells me "the module is already activated"...

@Ombudsman
vbox-guest are meant to be used inside virtual session. if you installed porteus on vbox hard drive then it's enough to copy vbox-guest to /porteus/modules folder and reboot.

@beny
vbox-guest must match porteus kernel version. this is only requirement. i'm using vbox-guest-4.2.6 with VirtualBox-4.2.10 without problems on my gentoo box.

Thanks for the prompt reply!

@fanthom
Could you please tell me which Porteus version is the right one for vbox-guest-4.2.6-porteus-v2.0-i486-1ftm.xzm and where I can get it?

I need a lightweight virtual machine in Windows for web browsing. The screen auto-resize option is very important.
Porteus looks very promising, you guys made a great work!

you can use 32bit standard or Xfce editions with this module.
please download from here:
http://dl.porteus.org/i486/current/

btw: if read only access is ok for you then you could just remaster default ISO and add this module to it.

Porteus-XFCE-v2.0-i486.iso

Proteus Installer from menu: System > Porteus Settings Center
gives me:
Failed to execute child process "./Proteus-installer-for-Linux.com" (Permission denied)
But the guide:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sqP2ld_Kxys
with
/boot/Porteus-installer-for-Linux.com
worked well!

Thank you very much! :Yahoo!:
