Hardware in use

Here you can post about your various experiences with PC hardware. You can also post about hardware that is not compatible with the linux kernel or not recommended for use with Porteus.

Hardware in use

Post#1 by fortix » 11 Dec 2011, 12:03

Hi and thank you for the welcome mail.
I'm using porteus-v1.1-rc2 64 bit in a > always fresh < mode and testing it in a classical sense of a RC and enjoy it every time :Yahoo!: .
my specs:
Inspiron C2D 7450 @ 2,13 GHz
AMD Radeon > Never install driver, 'cause causes too many crashes e.g. in KDE, but who am I, a newbie....And usually the resolution is good, if not very good without.
wlan0 Intel WiFi Link 5100
Unetbootin 5.63 on a sdxc card; gparted 2 partitions 1) vFAT and 2) ext4, tried "save.dat" manager, but as a newbie, I'll keep trying. I should read the documetation, hmmmh?
Can't test cups, don't know the password. `Til release, will test more... and let you know
BUT, what I use works ootb, and yep it's fast and what I like most a small distro with KDE :)

What would be great if SYnclient and power saver switch(running at 800 MHz right now) could run as an app/prog on the desktop??
I've learnt to respect the dilligence, the effort and the time people "invest" in their work, to help us users get a distro that's fun to use
and to let YOU know, keep up the good work, more... :Bravo:

Sitting in Berlin, enjoying my sitin with porteus AND yes, yes I am waiting :unknown: , like so many others, for the final release of porteus-v1.1 64 bit.

Don't be an ostrich, not seeing won't OPEN a possible solution

hello fortix and welcome on board,
What would be great if SYnclient and power saver switch(running at 800 MHz right now) could run as an app/prog on the desktop??
what do you mean by Synclient?
if you meant 'porteus package manager' then next version gonna update index files automatically after launch.

regarding power switch: not every user underclock CPU (i never does) and extra icon could be little annoying (please imagine users asking for other apps like opera, pidgin, etc - we would end up with desktop full of icons)
i would recommend creating a single module containing that change and put it in /porteus/modules folder. in case of doing distro-upgrade this module could be transferred between versions and your icon would be always in place.
Please add [Solved] to your thread title if the solution was found.

Also regarding underclocking/power saving, take a look at this thread: http://porteus.org/forum/viewtopic.php?f=39&t=667, and give PowerTOP a try. One of these days, I need to finalize that doc and put it on the main page...
Please take a look at our online documentation, here. Suggestions are welcome!

I think, the thing you want is to save your battery power..So, I see a nice feature for PSC and also a lot of code inside my head :%)
Your system should save the battery power in Porteus V1.1 Final if we stay with the new Linux patch about "Linux power saver"

Thanks!

Hi fanthom and ahau,

here a link to synclient and its 32 bit.

linux.die.net/man/1/synclient,

could this be packaged in 64 bit for porteus...

Thanks

Verfasst after 7 minutes 23 seconds:
Hi fanthom and ahau,
I forgot to mention that i use: file:///usr/bin/power_saver to simply reduce the MHz of my CPU.

That was my question, could one put an icon on the desktop and bam 800 MHz or bam 2133 MHz as one needs?

Thanks

@fortix

sorry for late response (i have forgotten about this thread).
could one put an icon on the desktop and bam 800 MHz or bam 2133 MHz as one needs?
yes but you need to create .desktop shortcut first.
please save this one as /mnt/sdXY/porteus/rootcopy/home/guest/Desktop/power_saver.desktop

Code: Select all

[Desktop Entry]
Encoding=UTF-8
Exec=/tmp/.terminal -e /opt/porteus-scripts/power_saver
Icon=utilities-terminal
Type=Application
now when you reboot porteus you should see an power_saver icon on guest desktop. just double click on it to run 'power_saver' utility.
here a link to synclient and its 32 bit.

linux.die.net/man/1/synclient,
'synclient' is present in default ISO. you may want to create a script which runs your synclient commant and create another .desktop file as per example above.

I hope this is the right place to post this; If not please have one of the moderators move it to the correct place.
My hardware: (kinda overkill for porteus)
ASUS M4A88TD-V EVO/USB3 AM3 AMD 880G HDMI SATA 6Gb/s USB 3.0 ATX AMD Motherboard
AMD Phenom II X6 1055T Thuban 2.8GHz 6 x 512KB L2 Cache 6MB L3 Cache Socket AM3 125W Six-Core Desktop Processor
Patriot G Series ‘Sector 5’ Edition 8GB (2 x 4GB) 240-Pin DDR3 SDRAM DDR3 1333 (PC3 10666) Desktop Memory Model PGV38G1333ELK
3 WD 250gig hdd's, 2 WD 500gig hdd's
ATI 4670 1gig PCI-e graphics card

All hardware is functioning including onboard sound.
Even recognized my HP printer as a usb removable device(has built in card reader)
Just wanted to add these to the list of "works with porteus"Using Porteus 1.1
Nice to find a slax like distro that just works :good:
