Casetronic "rack2tower" CLUSTER build...

Here you can post about your various experiences with PC hardware. You can also post about hardware that is not compatible with the linux kernel or not recommended for use with Porteus.

Yessssssssssss!!! :celebrate3:

"Say hello to my little friend"...
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=a_z4IuxAqpE

I bought my first Supercomputer 1u Computer cluster

Pls Note: I'm not sure if this will run Porteus outside
of a VM (but I know it will run Alpine Linux )...

Image
This build is intended as a hardware platform for my
Digital audio workstation (Non)... @ http://non.tuxfamily.org/

Image
The "mainboard"...
(I'll buy the 2nd one next month when my credit card cools off :%) )
https://www.pine64.org/?s=clusterboard&submit=Search

Image
The "module" (I intend to buy 13 more)... https://www.pine64.org/?page_id=1491
This is a 64bit quad core ARM Cortex-A53 Reduced instruction set computer

Image
The dual mITX "chassis"...
(free? I have one, I guess it's time to take it out of the trash heap and dust it off)
http://www.travla.com/business/index.ph ... er=product

The "module" uses an integrated Mali (GPU) so I can do
4k gaming (and 56 core rendering) w/ this chassis!

The chassis "stand"...
(free? I have one but I guess I need one more)

The RAM drive ...
(free? I already have one but I need to buy 4 more sticks of 4gb DDR2 800mhz ram)

I will need a module cooling strategy...

1st... foam @ the cpu center (graphene) to transfer heat.
https://www.ebay.com/itm/Three-dimensio ... wgI1PInVVg

2nd... foam @ the cpu edge (silicone) to electrically insulate.
https://www.ebay.com/itm/1pc-Blue-GPU-C ... Swo~1aoIts

3rd... a sheet @ the cpu center (graphene) to transfer heat.
https://www.ebay.com/itm/Cell-Phone-Coo ... SwDFBaIF14

4th... a ceramic heat sink over all three to wick off heat.
https://www.ebay.com/itm/HEAT-SINK-25MM ... 1438.l2649

Still waiting for my cluster.

In the meantime I am picking up this
accessory (I will need 7 of these)...

Image
This adapter will re-position my cluster usb connections
to extend out towards the back of the mainboard.

I have decided to abandon the USB adapter in favor of a MicroSD solution.

I might use this cluster tutorial...
https://www.linux.com/blog/building-beo ... t-13-steps

I might need to also compile Warewulf ...
http://warewulf.lbl.gov/trac/wiki/Download

And I'll probably need a Network File System ...
http://slakfinder.org/show.php?pkg=1559015
http://slakfinder.org/show.php?pkg=1654006

I'll probably need Memcached too...
http://slakfinder.org/show.php?pkg=1662466

And perhaps... "sdparm" (for the ramdrive)?
http://slakfinder.org/show.php?pkg=1661865

I also found a local "Pine64" distributor so my orders
can be reduced (from China @ 8+wks???) to 1wk...

It looks like this will be a Heterogeneous computing build... :unknown:

Now I'm considering combining the AsRock x470 itx/ac Ryzen 5 2400G
x86 Vega gpu frontend with a Pine64 "clusterboard" headless backend...

Image

So, to create my Beowulf cluster ...

I will use the X86 (above) w/ Porteus and the ARM architecture (below) w/ Alpine Linux *HERE*

Image

Image
The "RamDrive" already has a heatsink... :unknown:

However... for thermal cooling the Ryzen 5 and the "clusterboard"
I might settle with the following (in a layered strategy)...

Image
Thermaltake "Engine 27"
see... http://www.thermaltake.com/Cooler/Air_C ... design.htm

Image\
Versarien "Graphite Metallic Foam Heat Sink"
see... https://www.mouser.com/ProductDetail/Ve ... j3eQ3e0%3d

Image
"Alumina Ceramic Sheet Membrane Substrate"

Image
3M "Graphite Thermal Pad"
see... https://www.innovationcooling.com/produ ... rface-pad/

Finally, to mitigate the threat of Firmware: Security risks (e.g. "Bad USB")...
Image
I'm including a Perixx PS2 trackball keyboard.
see... http://perixx.com/perixx-periboard-514p ... -2016.html

Also, to mitigate the threat of Firmware: Security risks (e.g. "Bad USB")...
Image
I ONLY trust Kanguru devices to boot GNU+Linux :medieval:
see... https://www.kanguru.com/storage-accesso ... ware.shtml

Ok... by next week I should have all 7 "clusterboard" modules.

I also picked up 7 Class 10 MicroSD cards to boot Alpine Linux .

No rest for the wary... changing directions again.
Image
I'm scrapping the ramdrive and adding this...
Field-programmable gate array (FPGA)
see... http://zedboard.org/product/ultra96

Image
Which means to maintain capacity it's back to the X330 Hybrid drive .

Hi Blaze...

My Heterogeneous computing ( Jungle computing / Many-task computing ) " Beowulf cluster "
is configured in a 1u dual mITX server chassis primarily as a Digital audio workstation .
see... http://non.tuxfamily.org/

This type of Parallel computing Workstation is required to
mitigate Latency (audio) in Multitrack recording

However... this "cluster" can also function as a 60fps/1080p Video game console killer.

It could also probably be used to mine Cryptocurrency
(eg. Gridcoin ) w/ exceptionally high hash rates due to my
inclusion of a Field-programmable gate array .

In order to create a professional recording... powerful tools are required.
In the past they were expensive. A Mixing console is a good example.

The cost of a "used" Neve 8078 could be as low as $50,000 (USD).
A complete Pro Tools (HDX) system weights in @ > $17,000 (USD).

My Digital audio workstation costs $1500 (USD). That's less than the
cost of an entry level MacBook Pro (@ < 10% of my cluster's capability).

Pls Note: I am a professional Audio engineer (35yrs experience)
w/ a major label (Sony/Columbia) recording credit.

I have worked on many a Mixing console .
But I must admit my favorite was one of the...
Harrison Audio Consoles .

It was the console from Electric Lady Studios that
Jimi Hendrix used to record "Night Bird Flying".
