A laptop with a graphic card to compute vectors

Here you can post about your various experiences with PC hardware. You can also post about hardware that is not compatible with the linux kernel or not recommended for use with Porteus.

A laptop with a graphic card to compute vectors

Post#1 by francois » 07 Dec 2017, 22:37

Looking for the appropriate laptop for my son who is an engeneer student interested in cognitive ergonomy, he asked me to find one that has a graphic card so to ease the load of computing on his project. My search turned around nvidia graphic card and i7 cpu. I came up to:
https://www.laptopmag.com/reviews/lapto ... helios-300

Would you say that the i5 cheaper version could do the job? Or do you have a better proposal? The screen could be smaller, cheaper, but the graphic card should be a good one.

$1100 for a laptop!! Not including shipping and sales tax!! Wow!! That's double what I would pay for a laptop.

I've had two Acers before my Dell. They're an OK brand imo.

Do these laptops have a graphic card? What do you suggest in the same line as what you had purchased?

No other comments on a cost-quality ratio laptop with a graphic card at a cheap peice?

Put the words like Laptop and type of graphic card you want in the search on the internet. This is just a thought and it might help you.
I just like Slackware because I think it teach you about Linux to build packages where Ubuntu is like Windows you just install programs you want.

I did that in the last month and searched for a few days. Maybe Ed could give me the brand of his laptop. :)

A laptop with a graphic card to compute vectors

Hey francois. My current laptop is a Dell Inspiron 13, my prior machine was an Acer Aspire One 722 and the one before that was an Acer Aspire One.

I'm reasonable certain that most computing is done by the processor not the video card. :) And laptops TTBOMK don't have graphic cards like the desktops of old. The main considerations IMO are processor speed, RAM, size of SSD and what OS runs it. :%) (will it run Porteus. ;) )

Ask your son's school instructor what he would recommend. :good:

In fact, a friend of his a computer science engeneer told him that a graphic card is able to compute some mathematical equations involved with mathematical vectors. My son and his collegue are master level students. They are not neophytes.

Acer Predator Helios 300 (15-Inch screen) has CPU Intel i7 and Nvidia GeForce GTX 1060 GPU with 6GB of VRAM. This is a gamer box and it is able to stand VR headsets.

So the prerequisite is a good CPU Intel i7 seems top, but maybe i5 could be good enough. But I am not sure. And a quite recent graphic card as Nvidia GeForce GTX 1060 GPU with 6GB of VRAM, is really optimal, but maybe a less performing card could do the job of calculating vectors.

make sure you will have / can get or compile a working nvidia driver for this card.
..the nouveau driver is no good replacement, can not compete.

I expect they are not neophytes but rather master level game players and want the machine to play video games, with all their vectors. :D

This looks like a good list of notebooks for your son, and at reasonable prices. https://www.bestbuy.com/site/all-laptop ... 7600050003

Maxence, my son, plays once and a while. But not so much. He prefers litterature and socializing, not on networks like when he was a kid, but with real friends. And maybe with a beer... ... or two. :)

I am really proud of my son. :Rose:

:) The laptops in the link I posted have great specs and should meet his "vector" needs. ;)
