If anyone see any problem Please let me know. I see I can upgrade the memory to 8gb but would that help? If the CPU could be upgraded to a faster one I would like to do that too. I can buy a used CPU cheap on ebay if I knew which one.

I just like Slackware because I think it teach you about Linux to build packages where Ubuntu is like Windows you just install programs you want.

My question is 4gb of ram enough or should I up grade it to 8gb? Will it help or not? Remember I use a USB thumb drive and it is formated ext4 so I use it like it is install on a Hard Drive.

Hi Jack
4gb is most likely enough, but it does not hurt to have 8gb.
I would go for the latter, assuming your board uses DDR2-Ram you can get the memory modules at low price on ebay.
about the memory modules:
Check the MoBo specs to determine the highest supported memory speed
e.g. 667 or 800 Mhz..etc -- use the faster ones only.
You can mix them, but this will decrease the speed.
If the memory-controller support the (memory) Dual channel mode you have to plug in
pairs of the RAM-modules (size and speed) to trigger that mode.
Example:
If your board has 4 memory slots put memory modules of the same size and speed in
slot 1 + 2, or 3 + 4, or 1+2+3+4...all good.

It has 667Mhz memory in it but I will check on 800 Mhz. And one other thing the cpu is a AMD Sempron64 processor with 800 MHz HyperTransport 3400+, 1.8 GHz, 256K cache, 1.6 GHz FSB 433506-001 but I'm going to change that to this AMD Athlon 64 Dual Core processor with 1.0 GHz HyperTransport 5000+, 2.6 GHz, 1.0 MB cache, 2.0 GHz FSB 435917-001 to get better speed out of it.
EDIT:
I found this but not sure if it will work?

Be careful while assembling the parts.
Take precautions against Static Charge
Use fresh Thermal Compound between cpu and Heatsink -- not too much
If all goes well, you will have a PC powerful enough for the next ~5 years.
have fun

I knew about it but I did forget about the Thermal Compound. I will have to get a tube. I hope they sell it in the town I live in.
EDIT:
So far before I add those parts it work out of the box no problem so far.
EDIT2:
Well the Thermal Compound is no problem I have some now.

This computer only has a 7200rpm 80gb SATA2 Hard Drive. My question is should I install Windows 7 or format it to ext4 and copy Porteus Mate to it and use it that way? I don't need Windows I have my wife computer with Windows 7 all ready on it.

In addition, windows is so hungry that it will rapidly eat your hdd space.
On linux alone, since winxp. Bought linux compatible laptops and have put to the garbage win7.
Since then, I am less upset by my computer. And I have a nice hobby.

I think I will format the 80gb Hard Drive ext4 and just copy Porteus to it. If I have to I can always install Win 7 back on it. I have Win 7 on a USB so it won't be had to do. If need to I will buy a bigger Hard Drive.
This weekend I should have the AMD Athlon 64 X2 5000+ on that computer. I hope everything goes well for me this will be my time ever doing this. Hope it plays Video even better without freeze up.

I receive the CPU today and I put it in but when I try to boot up all I got was a black screen and it didn't even try to boot. So put the other CPU back in and it booted up. What could be my problem be any idea?

Hard to say without having the PC in front of me.
no bios messages on screen?
unusual beep-codes at power on? -- what would mean that something is not working.
Can you test the cpu itself? -- on a different MoBo -- or in a pc-parts-shop.

It like having a dead computer. For now I will keep what I have or what it has and go from there.

Here is the hardware guide.
http://h20565.www2.hp.com/hpsc/doc/publ ... -c00765934
Couldn't find any mention of the motherboard or processor on this. Need to know if the mobo supports the processor you are putting into it.
