Atom Z3735F does not boot - how to boot with grubshell?

Here you can post about your various experiences with PC hardware. You can also post about hardware that is not compatible with the linux kernel or not recommended for use with Porteus.

Atom Z3735F does not boot - how to boot with grubshell?

Post#1 by kultex » 30 Dec 2015, 16:48

I have a nice little fanless Atom Z3735F PC - Cenovo http://hometheatrelife.com/cenovo-mini- ... el-z3735f/

I would like to run some lightwight linux on it, but the only Linux, that boots, is Ubuntu following this howto http://www.jfwhome.com/2014/03/07/perfe ... book-t100/

with rufus + bootia32.efi + Porteus-LXQT-v3.1-x86_64.iso I managed at least to arrive the grub 2.02 shell - but I cant boot Porteus

normally it should be possible to boot with something like>

linux (hd0,gpt1)/boot/vmlinuz-3.18.0-9-generic root=/dev/mmcblk0p5
initrd (hd0,gpt1)/boot/initrd-3.18.0-9-generic

but I dont find files like this in the iso - does somebody know, how I can boot Porteus from the grub shell

just in case lspci+lsmod from Ubuntu

Code: Select all

ubuntu@ubuntu:~$ lspci

Hi

Until you get a better reply as I don't have your hw and don't use GPT
with rufus + bootia32.efi + Porteus-LXQT-v3.1-x86_64.iso I managed at least to arrive the grub 2.02 shell
there is something not quite right in that statement. To be blunter, you have one of the following scenarios

A You truly made a bootable usb stick/hard drive of Portues but you failed to change bios order

B Same as A but you did not truly update your bios as per link suggesting that you needed to....to allow usb boot devices

C You failed to make a bootable usb stick....bios attempted to boot usb device, found no bootloader so jumped to next detected media.....in this case we know grub2 is on the internal device

########################

We know that grub2 is only on internal media because Porteus does not use grub2 as a bootloader.....it uses Syslinux AKA isolinux.

###################

Suggestions
##########
You may like to eliminate some easy things? Some may not be relevant

1 Can you boot the usb stick with Porteus on a normal PC by pressing F8 at the bios screen and getting a Porteus menu up?

2 If (1) fails that might be a clue to (C) so what did you did do to make the bootable usb stick

3 In one of the links, it suggests disable secure boot in bios.........did you do so?

I boot a Porteus ISO using these grub2 commands:

Code: Select all

set iso=/ISOs/UP.Porteus-LXQT-v3.1-x86_64-nu.iso

     search -f $iso --set=root
     echo ISO root is: $root
     echo ISO is: $iso
     if [ -f (hd0,1)/USB_INSTALLATION.txt ]; then
         set linux_drv=/mnt/sdb1/porteus3.1
     else
         set linux_drv=/mnt/sda5/porteus3.1
     fi
     echo Porteus extramods is: $linux_drv
     set porteus_parms="volume=33 3"
     echo Porteus parms are: $porteus_parms
     echo
     loopback loop $iso
     sleep -v -i 7
     echo "Loading Linux"
# linux (loop)/boot/syslinux/vmlinuz from=$iso $porteus_parms
     linux (loop)/boot/syslinux/vmlinuz from=$iso extramod="$linux_drv/Modules;$linux_drv/modsavedat" volume=33 reboot=cold
     echo "Loading initrd"
     initrd (loop)/boot/syslinux/initrd.xz
Maybe they will help you with yours.

You could also look at an app called Easy2Boot.

thx for your answers

@aus9 the problem of all of this Atom devices - BayTrail tablets und miniPCs - they have very stripped down UEFI-firmware and they have a 64bit CPU, but a 32bit UEFI.
No legacy mode - no bootorder - there is only one possibility to boot from a stick and you select in the bios boot from this stick. And this stick needs a file called bootia32.efi in /EFI/boot/ and this bootia32.efi uses Grub2

The problem is described here: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+sour ... ug/1341944

@Ed_P ok I tried

linux (hd0,gpt1)/boot/syslinux/vmlinuz root=/dev/null
initrd (hd0,gpt1)/boot/syslinux/initrd.xz

but I get

error: invalid magic number

evrything I was searching the net, did not work

Edit: and I forgot to say - until now I avoided UEFI Hardware, but my OdroidU3, which runs perfect under Debian and LXDE has a Hardware bug - the on/off button is wrotten - if I have to restart it, it sometimes takes 2 hours...

And I am also afraid to load any bootloader, because I have no experience with this UEFI loades until now....

Confused. :unknown:

What OS is on the Atom's hardrive?

Where is Porteus on the hard drive or a USB drive? Is it installed to the drive? What did you use to load Porteus to the drive? What is the format of the drive? What else do you boot with grub2 on the Atom?

Check out this Porteus EFI posting: http://forum.porteus.org/viewtopic.php? ... 898#p33604

Porteus doesn't use grub2 to boot on EFI systems it uses rEFInd. And it doesn't use a cheatcode of root=/dev/null ttbomk.

ok... to make it clear:

on the internal harddisk, there is Android + Win8.1

on the USB stick, there is Porteus - rufus USB bootable image creator "burnd" it to the stick and I added the bootia32.efi, which is grub 2.02 to the stick

there is no other way to boot the stick than booting it with grub2

as long as I cannot boot one linux, that can deal with the internal harddisk and make an image, I will noch change the bootloader.... for me its to dangerous with this 32 / 64 bit confusion

I hope, its clear

I disagree.

Follow the steps in the link I posted. It booted on my wife's Windows 8.1 EFI machine with only 2 BIOS changes; 1. I disabled Secure Boot and 2. I changed the boot device order to put the USB drive first. No boot loader, no BCD changes, no Windows changes.

In the steps in the link I posted Porteus writes it's own EFI files to the USB drive. You don't have to manually do that.

You need to extract the kernel and initrd from the Porteus ISO. These need to be on the EFI partition. They are found in ISO/boot/syslinux/{vmlinuz,initrd.xz}
You need to extract the porteus folder from the ISO. This can be on whatever partition you choose. Even the windows one.

Put the kernel and initrd inside the boot folder on your EFI partition then boot like this.

inux (hd0,gpt1)/boot/vmlinuz root=/dev/mmcblk0p5 <--- obviously this is the path to the folder containing the "porteus" directory.
initrd (hd0,gpt1)/boot/initrd.xz

Good luck

Now I might be confused but as I have already declared I don't have your hw, let me make some suggestions to OP and others.

AFAIK /dev/mmcblk0p5 or similar assumes a flash media file structure and not a traditional Linux USB or Windows USB file structure.
The OP has said that only w8 and android are on internal so I don't think brokenman's suggestion will work as is....also hd0 might well be internal but its not clear to me if bios change boot order swaps the hard drive numbers? to allow usb to be seen as first hd0....and if it is....then I would not expect to use /dev/ you-know-what

2) Thanks for the bug link. It suggests to me, I may be wrong etc, that it might be smarter to download a porteus 32 bit and device has only 2G of RAM so no waste will occur.
b) that means any efi 32 bit will or should be already suitable for conversion

3) So finally it seems to me you have confimed you have a working grub2 Ubuntu and a bios that allows usb boot.

Therefore Porteus is well suited to extract some files from the 32 bit Porteus and provide a 40_custom grub2 bootloader entry.

The rough steps can be expanded upon if OP is interested but goes something like this

Download a 32 bit Porteus

On a linux system.....insert the ubunutu usb stick and look at its structure.....as I am not sure what you have lets assume you have one internal drive and one usb stick inserted
internal is sda
usb is sdb.....and its partitions are sdb1 sdb2 and maybe sdb3 of which
sdb1 is the efi fat32 partition.....so this is where you copy the porteus efi file

Lets pretend the balance of ubuntu is on one partition sdb2

using root powers we make a simple easy to type directories to hold our Porteus kernel and initrd (rootfs)

Code: Select all

sudo su
mkdir /tmp/iso
mount -o loop <yourdownloadpathway to 32 bit Porteus>filename.iso /tmp/iso
cd /mnt/sdb2
mkdir 1
Now I tend to use mc in a terminal for next bits but you can issue the filemanager command because you need root powers to
(the porteus files are currently visible in /tmp/iso)
--copy the porteus kernel and initrd files to /mnt/sdb2/1 and rename them to keep simple names v=vmlinuz i.xz=initrd.xz
--copy the porteus folder to /mnt/sdb2...including its sign file
--copy the changes folder to /mnt/sdb2

RESEARCH current /mnt/sdb2/boot/grub/grub.cfg to find out its hd number to use below....as it may not be hd0 as I use that beast I will show the sections that will interest you
menuentry 'Ubuntu' --class ubuntu --class gnu-linux --class gnu --class os $menuentry_id_option 'gnulinux-simple-838e3d73-ec57-4558-91d6-e81a02644e31' {
recordfail
load_video
gfxmode $linux_gfx_mode
insmod gzio
insmod part_msdos
insmod ext2
set root='hd0,msdos1'
set root='hd0,msdos1 its hd0 for me but YMMV

copy and paste the following suggestion into to replace /mnt/sdb2/etc/grub.d/40_custom

I am aware you may want more than one entry but we can add others later
#!/bin/sh
exec tail -n +3 $0
# This file provides an easy way to add custom menu entries. Simply type the
# menu entries you want to add after this comment. Be careful not to change
# the 'exec tail' line above.

menuentry'Porteus' {
set root='hd0,msdos2'
kernel /1/v root=/dev/sdb2
initrd /1/i.xz
}
I actually prefer you unmount the usb stick and create labels for each linux partition so we can use them in the 40_custom file...but I am not sure you are going to agree to any of this so won't expand on it until we know we not wasting each others time eh

do not bother attempting chroot and running update-grub

instead reboot with usb as first device on either your linxu PC or device....should not matter which
now you can update bootloader menu

Code: Select all

sudo update-grub
reboot to test

I can expand on this if interested.....but not sure how scared you are?

thank you all - I am writing from the Cenovo

I did not have to change anything on the stick - just the grubshell bootlines

grub> set root=(hd0,gpt1)
grub> linux /boot/syslinux/vmlinuz root=/dev/sda1
grub> initrd /boot/syslinux/initrd.xz
grub> boot

I had no panel but I had a !!!mouse!!! - in Ubuntu and Lubuntu I did not have a mouse - the problem is, that there are two displays and I just have the UNKNOWN1 - see screenshot, but with the mouse I managed to get the panel to the top and it recognizes the internal harddisk and mounts the ESP partition !!!!

the rest of the partitions are a bit strange - see the error in the leafpad file

so as soon as I have more time I will continue working on it - first stepp is done!!!

no attachments - so here is the screenshot https://www.dropbox.com/s/nibn69tfcs2me ... t.png?dl=0

I notice you have gparted open. I strongly suggest you do not open that any time soon to reduce the chance of accidently deleting modifying any flash partition.

Your next step unless bronkenman disagrees might be to add a new line to your fstab to allow auto mounting of your ESP partiton but it should be user and ro to protect yourself IMHO.
altho it says "bootable" and appears to have a key against it, which means its locked from normal naughty user actions

You may want to post one or more of your logs from /var/log?

[ 12.635] (II) intel(0): switch to mode 1920x1080@60.0 on pipe 1 using HDMI1, position (0, 0), rotation normal

intel(0): switch to mode 1920x1200@59.7 on pipe 0 using UNKNOWN1, position (0, 0), rotation normal - this means it takes the UnKnown1 screen as main screen - so I do not see the bottom panel - so this means, I have to write a screen.conf in xorg.conf.d

Re: Atom Z3735F does not boot - how to boot with grubshell?

Post#14 by kultex » 01 Jan 2016, 21:09

I just have to tell, even Porteus boots extremly quick, that performance in Porteus is extremly low - like scrolling in Firefox or even writing in this thread or just draging a window is painful.

With the help of you I managed to get evrything in Lubuntu - I have now mouse and evrithing is very quick and normal and I think, that this are missing kernel modules in Porteus. Just compare my last post with the modules from Ubuntu in my first Post - there is also sound and bluetooth in Ubuntu, but thez are not working until now.

Is there a new trial? version of Porteus, that has this modules?

ok - found something more on this: https://plus.google.com/+IanMORRISON/posts/UNWdwRMqy3j
