HI I am aware OP may not be active.
2 suggestions in case others have similar hardware and sound issues.
First with really old hardware they may be better off on 32 bit and use OSS instead of Alsa.
Secondly if they still prefer Alsa then read this link
https://www.kernel.org/doc/Documentatio ... ration.txt
but I will paste the relevant section
Module for AC'97 motherboards from Intel and compatibles.
* Intel i810/810E, i815, i820, i830, i84x, MX440
ICH5, ICH6, ICH7, 6300ESB, ESB2
* SiS 7012 (SiS 735)
* NVidia NForce, NForce2, NForce3, MCP04, CK804
CK8, CK8S, MCP501
* AMD AMD768, AMD8111
* ALi m5455
ac97_clock - AC'97 codec clock base (0 = auto-detect)
ac97_quirk - AC'97 workaround for strange hardware
See "AC97 Quirk Option" section below.
buggy_irq - Enable workaround for buggy interrupts on some
motherboards (default yes on nForce chips,
buggy_semaphore - Enable workaround for hardware with buggy
semaphores (e.g. on some ASUS laptops)
spdif_aclink - Use S/PDIF over AC-link instead of direct connection
from the controller chip
(0 = off, 1 = on, -1 = default)
This module supports one chip and autoprobe.
Note: the latest driver supports auto-detection of chip clock.
if you still encounter too fast playback, specify the clock
explicitly via the module option "ac97_clock=41194".
Joystick/MIDI ports are not supported by this driver. If your
motherboard has these devices, use the ns558 or snd-mpu401
The power-management is supported.
If OP comes back, I suggest since no-one has helped to resolve it so far, and I might not either, if they pursue alsa then do it my way....heh heh
1) try OSS first
2) if want alsa, remove all alsa configs suggested by members above and any other sound-config modules or /etc configs set up by the OP
3) full reboot
4) We need to discover if OP needs either or both the ac97_quirk or buggy_semaphore option.
----this can be achieved by removing the module, reloading the module with option1 or option2 or both option1 and 2
using root powers
and testing sound with a speaker-test.
I shall do nothing more until OP replies
