Dual display for Intel Corporation Ivy Bridge Graphics

I am presently not able to have dual display on a toshiba z930 satellite. The specifications for the laptop are presented in this link:
http://www.toshiba.ca/web/product.grp?s ... part=13950

root@porteus:~# lspci
...
00:02.0 VGA compatible controller: Intel Corporation Ivy Bridge Graphics Controller (rev 09)
...
[/code]

Googling I got that the necessary driver should be xf86-video-intel:
http://intellinuxgraphics.org/download.html

The xf86-video-intel is not the problem. Trying with slackyd -g xf86-video-intel, it seems that the driver is not missing on porteus:

Code: Select all

root@porteus:~# slackyd -g xf86-video-intel
...
xf86-video-intel-2.15.0-i486-1.txz [from slackware]

*** xf86-video-intel-2.15.0-i486-1.txz: already installed (xf86-video-intel-2.15.0-i486-1ftm).

All packages available are installed.

root@porteus:~#
I like to use xrandr to fix my dual display video problems. However, it does not work with my current installation:

Code: Select all

root@porteus:~# xrandr
xrandr: Failed to get size of gamma for output default
Screen 0: minimum 1366 x 768, current 1366 x 768, maximum 1366 x 768
default connected 1366x768+0+0 0mm x 0mm
   1366x768 0.0*
root@porteus:~#
xrandr does not see my second display, although it is plugged and that I get an exact copy of what I see on the laptop.

Do you have any suggestion to get dual display working with that laptop of mine? :)

Code: Select all

Could it be that this graphic driver is too recent and not covered or ill covered by the most recent linux kernel?

In the following thread, I see that there is an issue with the ivy graphic. But my understanding is underneath the knowledge unveiled:

Any suggestion will be appreciated. :D

hi francois,

here is my output on i3 (first generation) laptop:

Code: Select all

guest@porteus:~$ xrandr
Screen 0: minimum 320 x 200, current 1366 x 768, maximum 8192 x 8192
LVDS1 connected 1366x768+0+0 (normal left inverted right x axis y axis) 344mm x 194mm
   1366x768 60.0*+
   1024x768 60.0
   800x600 60.3 56.2
   640x480 59.9
VGA1 disconnected (normal left inverted right x axis y axis)
HDMI1 disconnected (normal left inverted right x axis y axis)
DP1 disconnected (normal left inverted right x axis y axis)
guest@porteus:~$
as you can see all possible outputs are listed: VGA, HDMI and even Display Port which doesn't have a socket in my latop (but seems that chipset is on the mobo).
it's not the case for your notebook.
are you sure they are not disabled in the BIOS?
ULV processor suggest this platform would be energy efficient...

please specify your connection type (VGA, HDMI, DP?) and link /var/log/messages, /var/log/Xorg.0.log uploaded to pastebin.com

thanks

I have a 3rd Generation Intel® Core™ i5-3317U processor as indicated by the link to the specs of the Toshiba satellite. I will come back with the requested information soon.

Follow-up on saturday afternoon: Sorry for taking so much time. Major electical breakdown in my quarter thursday nite and occupied since then.

On my stand alone display there is an exact copy (same size) of the laptop display located in the upper left corner.

I am working with porteus 32bit v. 1.2. Maybe I should switch to 64bit. Here are the information and the outputs requested:

1) The connection is vga.
2) toshiba-z930/var/log/messages:
http://pastebin.com/zwyVZHvu
3)toshiba-z930/var/log/Xorg.0.log
http://pastebin.com/5UwaGJ9E
4) I am looking in the bios right now.

Thanks for your time. :)

I have looked into the bios and found nothing special. However, thinking about it, if windows works 7 dual display why should it not work under linux?

kernel seems to be ok:

Code: Select all

Nov 17 13:17:46 porteus kernel: [ 5.589552] agpgart-intel 0000:00:00.0: Intel Ivybridge Chipset
xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx
Nov 17 13:17:46 porteus kernel: [ 7.835258] [drm] Initialized i915 1.6.0 20080730 for 0000:00:02.0 on minor 0
but DDX driver fallen back to fbdev:

Code: Select all

[ 10.385] (**) FBDEV(0): claimed PCI slot 0@0:2:0
[ 10.385] (II) FBDEV(0): using default device
[    10.385] (==) FBDEV(0): Depth 24, (==) framebuffer bpp 32
so probably xf86-video-intel-2.15.0 is too old.

i also see that you are still using 'autoexec=xconf;telinit~4' cheat which is obsoleted and could cause your troubles.
please remove it and reboot, then show me /var/log/Xorg.0.log once again.

thanks.

Here is the output file:
toshiba-z930/var/log/Xorg.0-2.log
http://pastebin.com/zJbK0w78

This might not make any difference, but as the second display was not plugged, I have rebooted with the second display plugged:
toshiba-z930/var/log/Xorg.0-3.log
http://pastebin.com/eAHmHcPL

Thanks.

seems that fbdev was still set as main driver.

last test:
please boot to text mode -> login and run 'xconf' -> edit /etc/X11/xorg.conf and change 'fbdev' to 'intel' -> run 'init 4'

if that wont help then please upload /var/log/Xorg.0.log and /var/log/Xorg.0.log.old but more than likely you'll have to wait for first rc of porteus-2.0 or use slax-7 which is based on slackware-14.0 already.

Cheers

Finally, I did what you proposed. Changing for intel in xorg.conf did not permit booting into X environment. But Slax 7 works. As you guessed, it must be the covering of graphics by the new kernel. I will wait anxiously for porteus next version to be able to work in dual display.

Thanks for your efforts. :)

I was on porteus 32bit. Now with porteus 1.2 64bit, the Ivy bridge works for me.

Merry Christmas to me.

Thanks to you fanthom ;)

Having some issues with other distributions on the wifi with ultraslim z930 laptop with intel core i5, I take the time to notice that VGA Intel Ivy Bridge was satisfied out of the box with porteus 2.0. :D
