No WIFI and no LAN with Toshiba C870D

Here you can post about your various experiences with PC hardware. You can also post about hardware that is not compatible with the linux kernel or not recommended for use with Porteus.

No WIFI and no LAN with Toshiba C870D

Post#1 by jjflash » 27 Feb 2024, 08:54

First at all: please excuse my bad english, I'm an really old native german speaking man who learned english in the 80's.

I've installed porteus (in different versions) on a few old notebooks to give them a second live.

Now I have a great problem with a Toshiba C870D Notebook, AMD E2-1200 / 4 GB Ram. I'm not able to get a LAN or a Wifi connection. I'm tried Porteus 4, 5 and the current version 5.01.

Before I tried runing Porteus, LAN and Wifi worked with Windows 8. I've installed Porteus on HDD and I've can't establish a connection. So I've installed Ubunto as a test to check the function of the Wifi. Under Ubuntu the Wifi works.

So, a new installation to Porteus shows me: Network is down. There a no additonal XZM-Modules running, only core, xorg and xfce.
The next idea I've had is to disable the Wifi in Bios and install an external Wifi-USB Stick. But: Theres no option in Bios (or UEFI) to do so. If I plug in an external USB-Stick theres the same error: Network is down.

So I've tried to install a driver manualy. lspci -v says, that the Wifi-Chip is a (problematic) Realtek RT8723AE. I modiefied the blacklist(s) in modprobe.d and installed an USB-Wifi-stick with the same behavior: Network is down.

What can I do to get the Toshiba Notebook runing? (Next step for me is, to open the notebook, remove the Wifi-Card and trying an external Wifi-Adapter).

Nice greetings from germany,

JJFlash

Hi jjflash.
Can you replace kernel to 6.6.18 from this tarboll ?64bit-ALL-kernel6.6.18.tar

Code: Select all

# All operations are must to do as root user!

# replace 000-kernel.xzm
# remove crippled_sources.xzm
# optionally add 06-crippled_sources-NNN-XXbit.xzm
/path-to/porteus/base

# replace vmlinuz
/path-to/boot/syslinux

# reboot Porteus
and not ot bad to see:

Code: Select all

Hello Blaze,

thanks for your response to my questions.

I have replaced the kernel and vmlinuz and I have the same problem: No Wifi connection.

As you can see from the output of dmesg:

rtl8723ae: Using firmware rtlwifi/rtl8723fw_B.bin

rtlwifi: Selected firmware is not available
Copy that file from your [wifi is working]-ubuntu system.

So, I have tried out your modul and it doesn't work. So I sadly say: I give up. This notebook will be running with Ubuntu in future.

Thanks a lot to all, who have tried to help me !

It's very interesting coz modinfo rtl8723ae is showing me old firmware rtlwifi/rtl8723efw.bin for another Realtek 8723E 802.11n PCI wireless card.
As far as I know rtl8723efw.bin once existed for the older rtl8723e chipset.
It's OK or NOT (where is firmware for Realtek RTL8723AE)?

No WIFI and no LAN with Toshiba C870D

Post#11 by jjflash » 07 Mar 2024, 09:10

Hello Blaze,

I'm sorry, but I can't do any further research, because I have given back the notebook to his owner (with Xubuntu 22).

But thanks a lot to your support!

PS: I think the Toshiba 870D isn't a great notebook, because it has further problems like incorrect initializing the internal mousepad and keyboard. Except for the keyboard and the display, everything in the notebook is cheap, especially the electronics.
I'm an old man, but I'm stil in learning process
