Porteus Installer does not show partition for installation

Post#1 by Triskal » 12 Sep 2022, 14:34

hi ports,
thanks for this great forum. You have helped me many times, but now I have a case for which I start a separate thread.

I want to install Porteus-XFCE-v5.0-x86_64 on a Lenovo T570.
- i start the porteus_installer and it doesn't show me the partition on the ssd.
- when i start gparted it shows me the ssd with its partitions.
- i can edit the partitions and also mount them.
but in the _installer window it only shows me the usb-stick i am booting from.
in the _installer i can also mount the partition. it also tells me that the partition has been mounted.... but it is not displayed and i can't select it.

Does anyone have any idea what this could be?

Where are you finding this porteus_installer command?

Code: Select all

root@porteus:/home/guest# porteus_installer
bash: porteus_installer: command not found
root@porteus:/home/guest#

Thanks Triskal. I think that's new, I don't recall seeing it in Porteus 4. But my USB installs follow the steps in the USB_INSTALLATION.txt file in the ISO; insure USB drive is FAT32, copy all ISO files to the drive, run the appropriate /boot/Porteus-installer-for file on the drive.

I'm still a newbie also. My test installer doesn't show the SSD either. Try this: How a Windows user can install Porteus 5.0 Cinnamon

That's wid Porteus 5.0 Cinnamon, but may work wid XFCE also...just set up your SSD something like that. Start at about 3) ... consider your SSD like that 32GB USB. Open the USB's folder you're using and copy them to the SSD.

(EDITED - thanks Ed_P!)

Triskal is your USB drive seen as /dev/sdb1 or /dev/sda1 ? On my nvme drive notebook the USB drive is /dev/sda1 and I had to change many of my scripts to accommodate that senario. Porteus Installer may have the same problem.

BTW & FWIW Karmi the forum system automatically adds forum thread labels to forum post links. :good: :)

@Karmi, thanks for the tip. It works. It's a little bit amazing. I am thrilled.

@Ed, that's exactly how it is. Apparently it is the same problem. Can I maybe take your customizations? What exactly did you change?

So my problem is already solved. whereas it is only a workaround. Maybe we can figure out how the installer accepts the ssd.

Great! I've been piddling wid that installer 'n something doesn't seem right, though I did manage to find the SSD...a couple ways. 1) Opening Files 'n mounting it from there. 2) Mounting it in the Installer, click Mount partition, but the device it sees at first shows 8.4G instead of the actual 120G size...weird. Then click Mount now 'n it then show the 120G SSD in the Installer. Then Next, and it does some installing, but misses the EFI folder. Anyway, I never liked the Installer anyway, and eventually saw something from one of the DEV's (ncmprhnsbl I believe) about the method I now use. Ditto on the "amazing" - ;)

ok, if the installer does not work reliably i can well do without it. it looked so nice and simple and you could well explain it to someone else. But if it then comes to problems I prefer to take the method of which I now know that it works.
Thanks again to you

Hello! I have the same problem but when booting on a dell. Perhaps I do not notice some engine that needs to be turned off or on. I don't know much about this, but I need advice
