Ignis an alternative Openbox module for Porteus-v4.0rc4 XFCE

New features which should be implemented in Porteus; suggestions are welcome. All questions or problems with testing releases (alpha, beta, or rc) should go in their relevant thread here, rather than the Bug Reports section.

conky, blueman, pasystray, xfce4-clipman and compton
What do these do?

I use 004-ClipIt-gtk3-1.4.5-x86_64.xzm and it works both in XFCE and Openbox just fine. So no need for at least xfce4-clipman.

Also, I do not find the ISO on https://sourceforge.net/projects/projectignis/
Where is it hidden?
Cheers!

Could you please add the md5sum so that a user can eliminate the - albeit slim - risk of a corrupt download.
Cheers!

Fun fact: I wanted to do the download via wget since I want to update my browser (I already created the newest palemoon xzm) and a running download is quite incompatible with trying to deactivate the browser module. I wonder why. (Irony: No, I not really wonder why.)

When you click on the sourceforge.net linked page above to get the "direct link" the URL is coded so that wget saves it as

Code: Select all

Ignis_Linux-Porteus-v5.0rc2-12092020-x86_64.iso?r=https:%2F%2Fsourceforge.net%2Fprojects%2Fprojectignis%2Ffiles%2Flatest%2Fdownload&ts=1604126136
Sure, adding the needed info of

Code: Select all

?r=https:%2F%2Fsourceforge.net%2Fprojects%2Fprojectignis%2Ffiles%2Flatest%2Fdownload&ts=1604126136
at the beginning and ending the link with just

Code: Select all

Ignis_Linux-Porteus-v5.0rc2-12092020-x86_64.iso
would be practical but oh so boring. :magic:

Update
the fail from sourceforge.net with coding a URL like so is even greater than I thought.
That URL, added only once with quotes ( " ) downloaded the large file twice:

Code: Select all

682d40cf4688bbf263c084c992261625  Ignis_Linux-Porteus-v5.0rc2-12092020-x86_64.iso?r=https:%2F%2Fsourceforge.net%2Fprojects%2Fprojectignis%2Ffiles%2Flatest%2Fdownload
682d40cf4688bbf263c084c992261625  Ignis_Linux-Porteus-v5.0rc2-12092020-x86_64.iso?r=https:%2F%2Fsourceforge.net%2Fprojects%2Fprojectignis%2Ffiles%2Flatest%2Fdownload&ts=1604126136
Instead of 1227 MB it downloaded 2454 MB!

Full frontal fail, SF, well played.

evergreen, I presume your ISO can successfully boot when it sits on the internal hard disc, and started like many other ISOs via e.g. grub?

Ignis an alternative Openbox module for Porteus-v4.0rc4 XFCE

Post#39 by evergreen » 31 Oct 2020, 17:03

@Rava - you are presuming wrong , Its booting with Syslinux I am not sure if you are familiarise with Porteus (I am kidding). but if you have downloaded Ignis Linux with WGET, palemoon, Firefox, Vivaldi , Safari , chrome or M$ Edge (this really matter ?) you will realise when you have the ISO that is the main Porteus XFCE RC2 with my packages collections and custom Openbox, there are some development from me but almost everything belong to Porteus Team. my improvements are focus to have a good feeling with the OS giving an elegant design ready to use with useful stuff and make it have good performance quality featuring Openbox.

Edited

@Ed_P I did not know that I can setup grub2 to boot an ISO. I understood now the @Rava's question

BTW I am using rEFInd with a custom entry

Code: Select all

menuentry "Porteus GUI mode" {
volume KERNELS
icon EFI/BOOT/icons/os_porteus.png
loader EFI/syslinux/vmlinuz
initrd EFI/syslinux/initrd.xz
#options "changes=/porteus"
options "changes=/mnt/sda7"
submenuentry "nomodeset" {
add_options "nomodeset"
    }
submenuentry "Always fresh" {
add_options "nomagic base_only norootcopy"
    }
    submenuentry "Boot to copy2ram mode" {
add_options "copy2ram"
    }
    submenuentry "Text mode" {
add_options "3"
    }
    submenuentry "pxe-boot" {
add_options "pxe"
    }
}

Actually he's not. This grub2 menu worked for me for the 1.3Gb iso.

Code: Select all

menuentry " Ignis Porteus ISO" --class slackware   --class icon-xtra-07  {

     set iso=/ISOs/Ignis_Linux-Porteus-v5.0rc2-12092020-x86_64.iso
     set linux_folder=/porteus5.x
     set boot_parms="volume=33 reboot=cold extramod=$linux_folder/Modules;$linux_folder/Modsavedat noload=save.dat"
     search -f $iso --set=root
     loopback loop $iso
     linux  (loop)/boot/syslinux/vmlinuz from=$iso       # $boot_parms
     initrd (loop)/boot/syslinux/initrd.xz
     }

Ed_P is right on that, most bootable Linux Live Systems can boot when copied on a hard disk, and there is more than one way doing so.

Ed_P, do you know if it is always an issue when a ISO file on a harddisk is in several parts across the disk, data wise?

I read more than once that this can be a game breaker, but having such a large ISO gives a higher risk of the data not being continuously stored on the hard drive.

Or is it just a matter of the initrd and kernel and after that booting okay the rest of the ISO can be across the drive as it wants.

Do you know knowledges bases that are about that matter?

I have booted many different ISOs located on my hard drive over the years and I think only once or twice did I find defragging my drive resolved a booting problem. I don't remember the ISOs involved or the problem I encountered with them. Sorry.

-update-

My booted Ignis iso is in 6 fragments.

So at least it seems to be a very rare occurance.

Well, for now i am working on putting the 5.0rc2 together, with my kernel and NVidia driver but the newer initrd from 5.0rc2. Almost finished, and then it is as good night charm a reboot.

Unless I do not finish and sleep more early than usual these weird days, which is also a very good option. :)

@rava Sounds good what you are doing is so exciting make everything works together in 5.0rc2 I know this feelings.

I have realised that grub2 can make boot an ISO thanks to @ed_p I am considering to switch refind now just to try loopback. I will have an entry ready to add any new release and who knows Slackware 15 come the next year and Porteus get a decisive version.

Cheers!!! :magic:

There are also several solutions where you can have several ISOs on a USB device - an external hard drive is here often a better way in using such than a USB thumb-drive, but people did so with a e.g. 16 or 32 GB thumb-drive and use all kinds of Linux Live ISOs to boot and choose the OS from here to Kingdom come.
