nvidia-drivers not working with geforce gt 740

New features which should be implemented in Porteus; suggestions are welcome. All questions or problems with testing releases (alpha, beta, or rc) should go in their relevant thread here, rather than the Bug Reports section.

nvidia-drivers not working with geforce gt 740

Post#1 by mr_hero » 08 Sep 2017, 11:39

Hi there,

since my ati-hd 4650 is no longer supported by ati and xorg, I finally replaced my old ati a geforce gt 740. Question now: How do I install proprietarty nvidia-drivers? I tried both nvidia-drivers (340.24 and 304.123) from here and placed them in the modules-folder (not at the same time, of course). No matter which driver I chose, I always got the message:

"Xorg failed to start up - deactiuvating proprietary drivers" at bootup. Any suggestions?

nvidia-drivers not working with geforce gt 740

Post#2 by donald » 08 Sep 2017, 13:18

Hi mr_hero

Those drivers are for an older porteus/kernel version => wont work
According to nvidia you need a 340.xx driver for the gt 740

Maybe you have luck and this one will work for you (x86_64)
http://forum.porteus.org/viewtopic.php?p=52388#p52388

good luck

nvidia-drivers not working with geforce gt 740

Post#3 by mr_hero » 08 Sep 2017, 14:17

Thank you for your quick and helpful reply! I'm still on porteus 3.0.1 (I think) and can't change the version easily because of the many customizations I made.
Does this mean the 340-driver actually should work with my card?

Edit:
My kernel-version is: 3.13.6-porteus

Edit 2:

It seems the system is still loading the noveau-drivers. This is my Xorg.0.log:

The module nVidia-340.24-porteus-v3.0.1-x86_64-1ftm.xzm is deactivated after bootup. When I activate it manually there is a blacklist-file in /etc/modprobe.d/ to disable the conflicting nouveau-driver.

So...does this mean porteus is just not activating the nvidia-xzm-module at boot-time?

nvidia-drivers not working with geforce gt 740

Thank you. Unfortunately, the 334.21-package (64 bit) from your link leads to the same error. In addition, nvidia-settings doesn't load up and says "segmentation fault". Before (with the 340.24-package) nvidia-settings did start but complained about the non-loaded nvidia-driver. So the program seems to be broken in the 334.21-package.

I tried copying /etc/modprobe.d/nvidia-installer-disable-nouveau.conf from one of the nvidia-packages to /etc/modprobe.d manually. Afterwards, I tried both nvidia-packages (340.24 and 334.21) again. I now get VGA-graphics and the nvidia-driver still won't load.

Edit:

Wait wait wait....let me guess...I need the 340.xx-drivers but they are incompatible with my version of porteus ?! :(

Did I mention the reason for buying a new graphics-card? It's because ATI stopped support for the Radeon HD4650 and Xorg is incompatible with the legacy-drivers. This would mean I now have two graphics cards: One too old and the other too new for my porteus-version. :wall: This is just frustrating...

It's not so easy as one might think

Nvidia drivers -the kernel module- must be compiled against the kernel in use.
The mentioned 340.24 package has been compiled for porteus 3.0.1 = kernel 3.14.15
you are using kernel 3.13.6.
Even if the settings GUI showed up, the kernel module will not get loaded because
of the wrong kernel version.

According to this page:
http://www.nvidia.com/object/unix.html
your card wants a 340.xx driver.

There is no info about 334.21 anymore.
This driver is compiled for the 3.13.6 kernel but seem not to support your card.

The driver package from the post by fulalas
(nvidia-driver-340.98-x86_64-kernel-4.9.xzm)
is compiled for kernel version 4.9 which is porteus 3.2.2

You have 2 options:
a) install porteus 3.2.2 onto an (empty) usb-flash together with this driver.
If it works, stay with it and redo your customizations.

or b)
try to compile the (340.102) nvidia driver in your old system, which may also
not work because of the older Xorg version.
You need the "devel" and "crippled sources" modules to compile the driver.
I'm not sure if they are still available.

How to
How to create a Nvidia driver xzm module
and
Porteus и NVIDIA. Собираем актуальный драйвер для видеокарты

And yes,the nvidia-installer-disable-nouveau.conf is needed to suppress
the nouveau driver.

mr_hero If you haven't already you might consider adding the Porteus system 000, 001 & 002 modules found here: http://dl.porteus.org/x86_64/archive/Po ... 0/modules/ to your modules folder to see if they help the problem. And running the Menu's - Administration - Porteus Settings Centre's Porteus Update option.

@mr_hero
If you need to update the kernel of Porteus v3.0 ISO,
you can do it easily as follow.

1. preparation
download a tool & an example

Tool:Porteus Kernel Builder
mkKernel-17.09.04-noarch-1.xzm (3.6 M)
http://www.mediafire.com/file/598zlfbo1 ... arch-1.xzm
md5sum: e209c6afebbc67d2bc5863aee4047d4b mkKernel-17.09.04-noarch-1.xzm

Build example:
v4.13.tar.xz (41 M)
http://www.mediafire.com/file/vaiqb2ag3 ... .13.tar.xz
md5sum: 83e3281637bb5631fb181f74f05265ef v4.13.tar.xz

http://www.mediafire.com/file/n5ite2pmp ... .10.tar.xz

2. set directory & execute tool
execute on Porteus environment.

Code: Select all

% cd work
% ls -1
mkKernel-17.09.04-noarch-1.xzm
v4.13.tar.xz
% su
# activate mkKernel-17.09.04-noarch-1.xzm
# xz -dc v4.13.tar.xz | tar -x
# /usr/local/sbin/guimkKernel
GUI 1. set working direcory: "work" as above
GUI 2. select kernel version: 4.13
GUI 3. select ISO whose kernel will be update.
GUI 4. push OK

-----------------------------------
Note:
If you want to update firefox too,
you can do it easily as follow.

1. preparation
download a tool

spm-17.08.30-noarch-1.xzm (1.3 M)

nvidia-drivers not working with geforce gt 740

Post#9 by mr_hero » 09 Sep 2017, 12:38

Thank you for the awesome links! Before I try compiling by myself, I want to mention another idea I got meanwhile: I downloaded the newest driver from the nvidia-homepage (NVIDIA-Linux-x86_64-384.69.run). It's an executable file. I also found a tutorial for making a xzm-file here.

Problems:

1) Is it possible with my porteus-version anyway?
2) The tutorial just copies the /mnt/live/memory/changes-folder into a package. This folder is full of stuff on my system -> not a good idea.
3) I remember some old tool...bpkg...or something...which could compile things directly into a package. Not sure where to get it and if it works with the self-executable .run-file from nvidia.

According to the base-modules:
devel-module is present. Crippled sources isn't. The link in the russian tutorial is dead, unfortunately.

My base modules:

Code: Select all

000-kernel.xzm* 003-kde_locales.xzm 07-printing.xzm*
001-core.xzm* 04-firefox.xzm* 08-VirtualBox-5.1.18-porteus-v3.0-x86_64-1prt.xzm
002-xorg.xzm* 05-devel.xzm*
003-kde.xzm* 06-libreoffice.xzm*
Number of modules in the modules-folder: 149 -> Updating porteus (or just the kernel) really is a problem for me.

Hi
--> NVIDIA-Linux-x86_64-384.69.run <--

--> Is it possible with my porteus-version anyway? <--
maybe, maybe not - it depends on which Xorg and kernel version is (still) supported by this driver package.

--> ..This folder is full of stuff on my system..<--
Compiling should be done in always fresh mode ;)
-- nvidia drivers in text mode --
and i use Blaze's script "nvidia.sh" from the tutorial to build a clean xzm.

One more problem:
Do you have the kernel headers module (crippled sources) for your kernel version?
Its not possible to compile nvidia drivers without them - IIRC
(the linked files in the (ru) tutorial wouldn't work anyway (in your case) -- wrong kernel version (4.5.3)

EDIT
I found a list of supported cards by the "nVidia-334.21-porteus-v3.0-x86_64-1ftm.xzm"
package, which has been build for porteus 3.0.
http://www.nvidia.com/download/driverRe ... 3666/en-us

as a last resort you could replace your card with one of these.....- :bad: - i know...

@donald
I have a question to you.
Already I have the Porteus-XFCE-v3.0-x86_64.iso whose kernel has been updated to 4.13.
Can I build the NVIDIA driver using following crippled_sources-4.13-64bit.xzm ?
If I can do, would you tell me how to do it ?

crippled_sources-4.13-64bit.xzm (19 M)
http://www.mediafire.com/file/sbq2ubtc4 ... -64bit.xzm
md5sum: 4afa13d73573e88cd721476f7725bb6b crippled_sources-4.13-64bit.xzm

Thanks.

@ neko
Hello neko

Well, that depends on a trial., as usual.
Do you have the matching "devel. xzm" and which nvidia driver?
( the older Xorg version may cause a problem )

It's been a while since I had to build a driver.
Besides the patching I had to do for my driver, I followed strictly Blaze's tutorial.
It's not difficult to understand - the pictures tell the story.

But i have built drivers only for Hardware actually in use.
Until now I haven't build any driver for "not present" Hardware.

1)get the nvidia-*.run
1b) and the blacklist.xzm, nvidia.sh, nvidia.tar.bz2 (from Blaze)
place them somewhere outside of the live system.

2)put devel, crippled sources, blacklist.xzm into the base folder > reboot into text mode

3)start the Midnight Commander (mc) locate (left column) the *run file and nvidia.sh, nvidia.tar.bz2
and copy them into /tmp (right column) > chmod +x *.run and nvidia.sh

4) run the nvidia *.run file -- if successfully finished, run nvidia.sh --
IMPORTANT: check that you have set the right path in nvidia.sh (bottom lines) before running it.
otherwise you will have no module in place.

No, I don't have crippled sources for porteus 3.0 :(

On the porteus-file-server crippled sources are placed in the kernel-folder on porteus 3.2 and later. Earlier versions don't have this folder. BTW, do you know the cheatcode for booting into fresh-porteus in text-mode? I'm booting porteus with grub4dos. When I set-up the menu a long time ago, I didn't implement "always fresh" and "text-mode" in my self-made menu.

Thank you for your reply.

This condition is mismatch against my devel module.
-- Do you have the matching "devel. xzm" and which nvidia driver? --

So, I gave up to build.

I introduced the binary module from Arch and changed the directory placement to match with Slackware.
I changed the kernel version from 4.13 to 4.12.11 of Porteus-XFCE-v3.0-x86_64.iso
in order to match with the Arch nvidia module.

Thanks.

No luck with new kernel and driver. The graphics card doesn't even get mentioned in the system-logs anymore. It's missing in dmesg and lspci. No messages from X.Org anymore...not even something about the nouveau-driver.

In addition, I get trouble with the number of modules getting loaded at system-startup:

I get plenty of messages like this:

Code: Select all

[ 28.416453] REISERFS warning (device loop125): sh-2006 read_super_block: bread failed (dev loop125, block 16, size 4096)

[ 28.840989] aufs test_add:233:mount[1751]: number of branches exceeded /memory/images/python3-3.3.2-x86_64-1gv.xzm
Also, pathes seem to be lost: I can't run su anymore. I will change back to old kernel now and try to compile drivers myself in fresh-mode.

Anyway, thank you for package and advises.
