replace kde apps to gtk apps for next porteus !

Hello,
I was busy for long time, but now I have Porteus v1 and I have some ideas may be will be useful for next version of porteus,

1-first, I found 'mplayer' moved from kde apps and can play it from lxde without kde modules, and this good,
2-second, if you added 'p7zip' then remove 'rar - unrar' because 'p7zip can extract rar files,
3-third, pcmanfm-1.2.3 better than pcmanfm-0.9.9 for Lxde,
4-fourth, need to share some programs to use them for both Lxde and Kde, Dependance on Gtk (not Gnome) for example:-
*-replace kpdf to evince.
*-replace kplayer to gnome-mplayer.
*-replace kcalc to galculator.
#- the size is not big and the features almost the same,
#- if you delete kde modules then you can use 'evince, gnome-mplayer, galculator',
#- if you delete Lxde module then you can use 'evince, gnome-mplayer, galculator',

what do you think about these changes !!
best regards,

A majority of your apps are from Gnome Desktop, and If we use them, we will need to install gnome libs - is it right?

wrong,
these programs are dependance on Gtk not Gnome,
I installed these on lxde porteus without kde modules even and I created modules,
1.3M = evince-2.32.0.xzm
360K = gnome-mplayer-1.0.0.xzm
galculator = .. k

If the functionality is the same, and the size is the same, i see no reason why we can't swap these out. Having better compatibility is important for lxde users.

Hi Arabic_World. Welcome back!

I think it's good idea :)

About number 3.
Do you mean this pcmanfm-mod-1.2.3 ?

@all
btw some apps for gnome http://gtk-apps.org/
probably we can replace some apps of kde on apps from Gnome.

@brokenman
the functionality and the size is almost the same,
but the main thing is to use these programs on both Lxde and Kde desktops.
if users deleted kde modules '004-kde, 005-kde-apps' , then users can use 'evince, gnome-mplayer, galculator' and they wont lose 'kplayer, kpdf, kcalc' !!
the same if users deleted Lxde module '003-lxde' , then users can use 'evince, gnome-mplayer, galculator' without problems.

I can upload ' 'evince, gnome-mplayer, galculator' modules , if need it to test = 2 MB !!

@blaze
yes, I mean this one, but you can use binary from Salix server
http://download.salixos.org/i486/13.37/ ... 86-1gv.txz

also, as you said we can replace some kde apps to Gtk apps , but not Gnome because we don't need more libraries.

best regards !

here is gtk-apps.xzm module for 'evince, gnome-mplayer, galculator' , to test = 1.6 MB !!

I will test them.

Is it possible to have the x86_64 version of these pkgs ?

Good Job!

Error!
evince-2.30.3-x86_64-1gsb.txz
poppler-0.12.4-x86_64-1.txz
gnome-mplayer-0.9.9.2-x86_64-1gsb.txz
These pkgs are not compatible with Porteus v1.0..
Our current slackware version is Slackware-13.37, and these pkgs are using Slackware-13.1

Do you understand?

Cheers!

did you test it on 64-bit ?
I tested packages before answer you , every thing was fine, => check your system or internet !
also to remember you, that's slackware 12,13,13.1,1337 the same in package tree.

13.1 should still be ok for Porteus. I use it in the PPM because it is still more populated than 13.37. It is nice to use 13.37 wherever possible though.

Not only replace some apps, but find replacements for LXDE only porteus, like: which program can make screenshots?

The users that use KDE porteus will be happy with the app that KDE delivers, bbut when you run Porteus with LXDE, you want to get rid of all KDE stuff, but therefore you need an "LXDE_APPS.xzm" module, at least that's what I think.

And I suggest geany ! best integrated environment editor that there is. xD

Second that! (KDE is very nice just as it is totally irrelevant in the big scheme of things.)

I agree, honstly they made a better looking Windows / aero desktop that windows 7 itself.

But the overall picture nee4ds to be to be free of such things, the user is the one who should choose if he wants KDE, LXDE, XFCe, Gnome or whatever...

And the ideas behind Porteus are so that it can be more easily done than with other Linux distros...

But we have to crate the LXDE-progams module first...

And the programs should be the same for 32 bit and 64 bit, when one program has issues with 64 bit we should choose another one for that certain task... unless we can finally debug that program, that is...

So: How do we go there?

It would be neat if the first post of this thread got updated with the kind of programs that are needed as replacement for what KDE delivers
like:

[x] syntax highlighting editor - geany does so
[ ] screenshot utility - GIMP can do it but it's an overkill... mtpaint can do it but it's complicated to be used when you not know it...
[ ] image viewer - should be able to: view all kinds of images [best would be: animated PNG as well!) - fullscreen mode - slideshow mode in fullscreen
viewnitor is able do do all that but I am unable to get the newest version to run. But an older one has less dependencies and has all we need.
So what do you folks think= Do we use viewnior V0.6?

... and so on...
