Is it too early for a RC5 wishlist?

New features which should be implemented in Porteus; suggestions are welcome. All questions or problems with testing releases (alpha, beta, or rc) should go in their relevant thread here, rather than the Bug Reports section.

Is it too early for a RC5 wishlist?

Post#1 by fullmoonremix » 06 Aug 2016, 14:30

:unknown: There hasn't been a wish list since RC2.

My project is suspended for the unforseeable future because it depends on a USM/MC/NetworkManager error-free CLI standalone (no toolkit) 001-core.

I think brokenman has a new 001,002 and 003 for Cinnamon and Mate. I think he fixed what you needed.
I just like Slackware because I think it teach you about Linux to build packages where Ubuntu is like Windows you just install programs you want.

Hey Jack...

Unfortunatley... whatever it is that was updated did not address all my concerns.

My concerns are...

To include in 001 (CLI)... "all" dependences required for NetworkManager
...MC and USM to function without the need for 002/003 (GUI).

The only change (I see) is the dependencies for MC are now included
and NetworkManager stops producing "shared library" errors @ boot.

NetworkManager is still not responding to nm-tui (ncurses) or nm-cli.

Other than login... the only thing needed should be nm (tui/cli) to make USM
functional without the need for 002 or 003 (eg. slim GUI display manager @ 002).

I can easily solve this problem "by hand" (w/out USM) with...
http://webwarper.net/ww/~av/slakfinder.org .

I only need the complete dependency list for Network Manager.
I could use the one in the Arch repo but there may be issues.

Also... when there is finally a rc5 wishlist I would highly recommend adding to 001...

No worries Jack... I will either have to use Arch repo or wait for rc5.
Those bug posts refer to slim which is not (and should never be) in 001.

Slim is a display manager (GUI)... NetworkManager is "headless" (CLI) only it's frontend is GUI.

In any case NetworkManager is quite bloated (for my taste) when
my derivative is complete I will deprecate it in favor of Connman.

The 001 and 002 might be the same when rc5 is release but not sure.

I have spent the last 24 hrs tearing 001 apart and reconstructing it.
It seems an autonomous 001 is only possible with Connman not NetworkManager.

The problem is all the 002 deps (bloat?) that NetworkManager requires. It is my point
of view... that although not user friendly Connman is more practical for doing builds.

Not for nothing... but I just don't really see the point
in keeping NetworkManager in 001 instead of 002.

fullmoonremix can you try something for me please?

Boot in Porteus with the newer 001,002 modules from the testing folder. Make sure you are in copy2ram mode and not booting from an ISO.
Verify that /etc/porteus-version says rc5
Open a root console and run: update-porteus

This should download an updated 001 and 002 module. It will require a reboot and on the next reboot the updated modules should be in place. Test text mode with nmtui.

Thanks Jack. Looks like a script error. Let me investigate and get back to you.

EDIT: Please try again now.

It didn't seem to upgrade anything the modules were dated before upgrade Aug 3 and you can see after upgrade same date. And yes I did rebooted.

If you try the update again does it say there are updates?
