Porteus-v1.0-rc1-x86_64 last call for testing

New features which should be implemented in Porteus; suggestions are welcome. All questions or problems with testing releases (alpha, beta, or rc) should go in their relevant thread here, rather than the Bug Reports section.

For Slackyd , could you post the link of the thread where you have seem that.

For Password , normally in the next version , the guest account will be available by default at boot , for boot on Porteus with Root Account , you must use the toroot cheatcode.

For package manager , he still working on it.

So for now, lets move Slackyd topic on package manager for next release:

Glad to hear that there is the toroot cheatcode,

I prepared some new lxde packages on slackware 13.37

http://ponce.cc/slackware/slackware64-13.37/lxde/

substitute the pcmanfm package with this one for not having the warning during use as root
pcmanfm-20110422_3f899d1-x86_64-1ponce.txz

be aware that the following packages shouldn't be needed anymore (gvfs, that should have no dependencies, is used instead of gnome-vfs)

Code: Select all

gnome-mime-data
ORBit2
GConf
libbonobo
gnome-vfs
also, configuration files in /etc are changed, so I suggest to start from the new ones and customize them accordingly (or something may break ;) ).

Hamza wrote:@ francois,

If you have free time , you can make a module of Slackyd+deps , if some users want use it .

You need post the full details of your module with all deps included in.

Regards,
I have included it in Slackyd: a useful package manager:
http://forum.porteus.org/viewtopic.php?f=48&t=142

I hope this is ok. I could also put it in another thread and in another section if you also prefer.

@hamza:
On page 12 of this thread fanthom has said:
... "Which kde package is needed (... for multilingual french canadian...)?"
wait for rc2 as i will upload localization packages on the server and update LST.

And on page 11, he wrote:
... @all
waiting on a latest LXDE from ponce (need some testing) and KDE-4.6.3 which should be out Tuesday next week.
I'm going to release rc2 Wednesday/Thursday next week and it will be a unofficial FINAL, as we need to wait on 32bits to stay in sync.
We are getting really close to 1.0 :)

What is the syntax? Is it:
autoexec=toroot

Thanks beny, your help is really appreciated.

However, meanwhile I did try:
autoexec=xconf;telinit~4;toroot

And it worked!

@beny:

1) Couldn't wait until wednesday or thursday. It does not work for me. Here is the content of :

Section "InputClass"
Identifier "keyboard-all"
MatchIsKeyboard "on"
MatchDevicePath "/dev/input/event*"
Driver "evdev"
Option "XkbLayout" "cf"
#Option "XkbVariant" ""
Option "XkbOptions" "terminate:ctrl_alt_bksp"
EndSection

cf should be the good option. What could be wrong? (Is there a link to the overall XkbLayout options. However, I know that this did worked under Salix os). cf does not seem to be good as I get some other kez )as zou can read= misplaced.

2) Under root, impossible to save the x server display configuration to Xorg.conf from within nvidia x server settings gui. Could this be fixed.

Thanks.

@fanthom
Thanks for the advice! Happily working from RC1 LXDE for the last 24Hours
One bonus already - no mysterious loss of resolving; VMs running continuously.
Busy working with some Python math stuff, will post again when I have more
experience from RC1 as a host. Display on my Home T180 box is far more
responsive than it was from beta CD, in both KDE and LXDE.

@francois
"I have seen reading somewhere that fanthom does not intend to keep slackyd in version 1.0"
hmmm... i think it wasn't me :) i like slackyd very much for the '-d' option and i'm willing to keep in Porteus for a long time.

"-at booting still in cli mode, there are a few funy caracters (...@ or the sort)"
some processes are launched in the background to speed up getting into GUI. Could you try to discover from which precess they are coming? i have made cups starting script silent and could do the same for others if needed.

"-for naive users not used to root privileges, the file psswd.xzm needs root privileges to be displaced into /porteus/modules. I imagine that this has to be automated."
ok will add extra question for moving passwd.xzm to /porteus/modules

"And what about rights from guest to insert other modules into /porteus/modules?"
must be done from root account i'm afraid

"-if we want non-root, we will be stuck with extra procedures all the time"
that's how unix like system works (vide sudo, SUID, etc...)

@ponce
"I prepared some new lxde packages on slackware 13.37"
well done :) just testing....

"substitute the pcmanfm package with this one for not having the warning during use as root"
i like the root warning - it let's you recognize which pcmanfm instance has root privs. i'm staying with original one.

@Hamza
"Why , when I starting LXDE , I haven't FR in keyboard layout ?"
will check what's the max number of layouts possible, but i think it's 4 only

@jcuk
Vbox problem resolved - i have left accidentally some *.cache files in /usr/share/applications and /usr/share/mime. GUI in Slackware-13.37 doesn't like cache files which are sneaked into fs (while modules are activated) and it's causing a hang.
This is a new rule for creating xzm modules now:
All *cache files must be removed from xzm, especially:
- /etc/ld.so.cache
- /usr/share/applications/mimeinfo.cache
- /lib/modules/`uname -r`/modules.dep
- whole /usr/share/mime folder
i have updated /usr/bin/changes-time.sh script respectively.
Once again - thanks for bug report. you have saved us a lot of possible troubles :)

Cheers
