bit too dangerous to my liking. i'm worrying it may cause changes corruption.
please find a better way, some hints can be find in this old thread (Porteus 0.9 :)):

I'd like to suggest to rename all x86_64 core modules so instead of, for example, two 05-devel modules we'll have "05-devel.xzm" and "05-devel64.xzm"
Same for "vmlinuz" and "initrd.xz".

or maybe we could drop 32bit arch entirely?
see Ubuntu:
http://www.phoronix.com/scan.php?page=n ... px=MTgxOTQ

that would definitely lower overhead on the dev side and simplify things.
perhaps we could froze 32bit on 3.1 release and deliver only security updates provided to Slackware-14.1 by Pat.

what do you guys think?

@ fanthom
you may take a look at the server-logs...how many 32bit downloads have been done...
That should give you an idea whether 32-bit is still important.

What is good for the developpers is good for us all. :)

This could be called a very good after sale service.

I agree, version 3.1 is probably last that we can grab ready-made LXDE module and it would be something like Long Term or Extended Support Release. :good:

drop 64 bit...32 bit fits all..
..up to now has 64 bit no real Advantages..

Afraid not quite au fait here. Thought common consensus of the web was that, without a compelling reason to move to 64 bit, one is better off sticking to 32 bit. :Search:

have a look here:
http://www.phoronix.com/scan.php?page=a ... _x64&num=1

final sentence:
While the Linux gaming performance with the Intel HD Graphics on Mesa was about the same, for nearly all of the other computational tests the 64-bit version of Ubuntu Linux continued to offer superior performance over the 32-bit Ubuntu build, as expected.

The comment was not meant seriously, but true.

OK.lets see:
I looked at the results...here one second ,there one second ..not sooo much
and in general, benchmarks have nothing to do with the daily workflow...

I agree when you say that maintaining 2 archs of porteus
claimed more of your free time as you like.

But I think more about all the not so rich countries / people
who would lose an opportunity to use their hardware.

and what about the portability?
"hey donald, please help me,my system crashed.";..sure, wait a moment...Oh you're using a 32bit PC....I'm sorry, my porteus usb-flash won't boot here...sorry"....

Some people (like me) use it on systems with more than 4Gb of RAM. 95% of the time it's 8 - 16 Gb in my case.
AFAIK, most 32bit programs have the same limitations.
P.S. PAE kernel doesn't work on some of the CPUs (as I was told when I asked for it here).

P.P.S. Sadly, 32 bit version is sometimes needed for older CPUs (I usually have both versions on one USB flash).

@fanthom You're looking for a ways to reduce your workload (sorry, didn't find a better word)? Or you're just curious?

Hi Kriss
Yes you're right, some very old hardware (PII + amd k6) may not support PAE very well, if at all.(some Pentium M processors "Centrino"too)

But I believe that PII's and similar are attached onto Motherboards
which do not support such a lot of RAM.(no need for a PAE kernel) and I'm in doubt that such old Hardware is able to run any modern OS (like porteus)

To have both versions on one usb-flash is nice...as long as we get both versions..

Ubuntu 14.04 LTS 32-bit vs. 64-bit Performance
Michael Larabel wrote:Usually the only caveat in not using a 64-bit Linux image is if running a system with less than 2GB of RAM.
PC bit over 5 yrs old. Getting on famously with Porteus on just under 1GB ram. :unknown:

Boils down to: versatility vs. velocity
