I opt for functional UI rather than a beautiful UI. So I have stick to KDE since learning linux.

I think they should pull the resources together and develop based on QT/KDE as pointed out by fanthom post.

If I understand correctly, you have moved all your work to a Beta Distribution?

For starters have not been able to boot Freya from hdd. Luna, though, seemed to run ok until during a file download Midori gobbled up all my memory plus another 250 MB of swap space -> page thrashing. Using ps -e came across process Pantheon Files, which I presume means I was experiencing Pantheon DE.

After freeing up more memory Midori could continue download process, but instead did nothing. Download must have timed out, but Midori issued no such message. Downloading anew, Midori did not resume unfinshed download, but asked to replace file. Instead of deleting 600 MB incomplete file it complained that there was no space left for download. Mind you this was state a year ago, but could be different now. Also found the horizontal and vertical scrolling on Midori a bit of a headache.

No need for flash plugin. Midori played videos, from YT like site, out-of -the-box. The choice of extensions/addons seemed very limited however.

Movie player out-of-box would not play as had no codecs. /cow was already at 28% of used space, and after apt-get at 58 %. (Suppose distro has small footprint because there is nothing there!) Movie played well, picture was surprisingly pleasing to the eye, and I was left with the impression that sound volume could be turned up considerably more than on Porteus. (Mint also seems to give more volume)

Lastly Scratch was not that impressive. File manager could not be explicitly invoked. Clicking on a file in file manager, invoked Scratch which then informed that file could not be saved and gave option of saving somewhere else. Chose current directory and got no further. File did not appear for editing. :Search:

Hi Bogomips,

Yep, moved to a beta. So far, I've not had any significant problems. This is for my own use, so it's not the end of the world if it were to crap out on me. I've seen enough bug reports that it's definitely not ready for "production" use, which I guess means running your website off it :D

I did customize my apps, I prefer gThumb to the built-in Photo app, and I am a die-hard Chrome user. Yes, Google takes my data, but I feel like I get good things in return for it. I've tried Midori several times over the years, and just never cared for it either.

I had no problem with the Pantheon video player at all, worked a treat, so I imagine it's been improved since you tried it last. Of course, you may be using more obscure formats than I have.

I'm definitely in the "User" category, I can follow instructions and the CLI does not scare me, but I am not a programmer. I cannot attest to the "elegance" of a piece of code, only to the "elegance" of the user interface and how I get along with it. I think Pantheon is a beautiful, snappy desktop, and would like to see how it performs on Porteus with a slim back-end on it, so I suggested it :)

Thanks!

TM

Think it means not trustworthy to do something like billing for customers or for yourself. May not be able to get them out on time!

Ubuntu Dependency

Will Elementary OS continue to be based on Ubuntu?

If so, will it only be LTS releases, or others as well. I know that crunchbang used to be based on Ubuntu as well, but they have since switched to straight Debian…

There are no plans at this time to switch away from Ubuntu. At the very least, the next release of elementary will be based on Ubuntu. Anything after that is yet to be determined, though Ubuntu is still in the picture at this time.

The elementary team does not necessarily target LTS releases as a strategy, but the next release of elementary is currently aimed at 14.04, which is an LTS release. Whether this actually happens is yet to be determined.

elementary still follows a “when it’s ready” policy.
Pantheon Possibility
LocalHero wrote: Pantheon for other OS

Hi,

ElementaryOS is really nice, and the desktop is a pleasure to use. Are there any plans to make Pantheon more portable to other systems besides Ubuntu? I personally don’t like Ubuntu, and would prefer openSUSE, whereas others probably prefer Debian or Fedora or Arch. There’s a guy that got Pantheon kind of working on openSUSE here:
http://susestudio.com/a/yReQfw/pantheon-desktop—2
..but it still has a lot of bugs and doesn’t integrate well. It would be great if Pantheon was more portable, so we can use this sweet desktop on whatever OS we prefer.

Thanks a lot!

The elementary developers have made the Pantheon Desktop both modular and portable for use on any system the user desires. However, there has not been any work done to build and test the environment on other Linux distributions.

There is not enough manpower to package each component for all of the different distributions out there, so it is up to the community to work these issues out. If you find an issue that impedes integration, please report it on Launchpad so that we can work towards a better experience for everyone.

Elementary for Tablets?

Hey,

I just wanted to ask smth real quick… :-) ...Is there a plan for an elementary os for tablets (since there are more and more x86 tablets now) or even an ARM support, like debian?
I think this would be really cool, since it seems to me that the hot corners and the dock would go great with the touch screen :D
I heard that Canonical is killing off its project for Ubuntu on android, but since I am seeing more and more tablets with x86 architecture ( i also found out a tablet that runs android and linux together, it’s called Unity from the australian company Vixtel: vixtelunity.com ) and generally with the windows 8 and the hybrids laptop - tablet it seems to me that the world is wanting something more from their tablets (I personally find android limiting in what you can do despite the millions of apps)...

Thanks very much for taking the time to read this :))

I think one of the dreams of the elementary team is to have a mobile OS, or a mobile interface like what you are talking about. Unfortunately, there are not enough resources for such a big undertaking. I believe there was an experimental build of elementary OS Luna on ARM, but I haven’t followed it close enough to know how well it works.

If you have a tablet and you want to donate some of your time to helping the dev team, you could do some testing and let us know how it works. Maybe one of these days, we will see a mobile OS, but not anytime soon.
Relationsship between Elementary and Eustasy

Answered by lewisgoddard 8 months ago

Hi there, Lewis Goddard here (eustasy).

Put simply, no.

To elaborate, eustasy, formally Eustasy UK Ltd (note: Not formerly), is not officially affiliated with elementary OS, although I can understand the confusion, as the current eustasy.org is a little generic, and uses some quick-and-dirty content from almost a year ago that should really have been replaced by now.

While the people in eustasy have produced some things of use and in support of elementary OS, and in return received support and advice from their talented designers on occasion, it is not in any way an organised relationship.

eustasy was originally a collective of students established in 2004 to produce web-based projects together. This expanded out into the production of web and mobile apps and extensions which garnered of a few million visitors within a few years (when I joined in 2007). It was quickly realised that a small introduction of advertisements would supply budding developers with a platform from which to launch their products, thus sustaining, if not snowballing, the organisation financially. (note: at the time eustasy not a company.)

After something of a hiatus last year when developer membership (another note: members are anyone who has contributed, automatically) failed to pick up in the early months as it usually does, I have destroyed much of the older, more inefficient architecture and replaced it with a newer version centred around GitHub repositories and open-source development. It is currently run as a not-for-profit private company (much like elementary, but unrelated).

As for the design, eustasy had already dropped the capital E (a point of respect for a person or place in English), and the www long before elementary was on the scene. The elementary logo did lead to a modification of ours (the wave was originally the same shade as the lines). As for the backgrounds (which, let’s face it, are a major part of what you see), they are the place holders I talked about earlier, chosen simply because they where my personal backgrounds as I overhauled the site.

If you want to ask anything else regarding eustasy, my Twitter and Google+ are below, and my website lists my email.

TL;DR (totally understand)

Not officially, but we help out with stuff where we can. Its part of what we do.
