Use Brasero instead please, include Chromium and Thunderbird

New features which should be implemented in Porteus; suggestions are welcome. All questions or problems with testing releases (alpha, beta, or rc) should go in their relevant thread here, rather than the Bug Reports section.

Use Brasero instead please, include Chromium and Thunderbird

Post#1 by angry1 » 22 Apr 2014, 23:27

I've now wasted three discs on crapp PBurn, the hell were u guys thinking? It doesn't burn data discs properly, yet Brasero works. I am not a newbie. Did u test that crappy program? Disgusted.

And can you make Thunderbird and Chromium an option in the build thing, and I don't mean as an "or be stuck with the default options" I mean add them to firefox and the other client. Why should I be stuck with one, they don't all work for everything.

And how about Wine and Openshot?

I see ur trying to make a name for yourselves with fast loading, but why not also or instead on: pleasing the user? So if a user is okay with a delayed load time so that he or she doesn't have to spend time trying to figure out how to install what they want, and this isn't Ubuntu, why not do it? What good is fast loading if you're stuck with stuff that doesn't work or that you can't figure out or don't want to from having been exhausted from learning endless new things, especially on linux distros? Not everyone is superman or has the time to keep fiddling around.

And can someone make an explanation as to what to do with the settings thingies saved for porteus? Where the heck do they go to when you want to load them?

Welcome on porteus forum angry.

You really have an original way to introduce yourself on this forum.
We hope that you will have the finesse to appreciate the subtleties of this distro. 8)

Your questions would better be under general chat or under newbie questions. It would be good that we have some cues concerning the DE and architecture you are using. As an experienced user most of your questions would have some answer by looking at porteus faq
http://www.porteus.org/faq.html

or by using google search with index words including porteus.

For chromium, the package is right here for 32bit:
http://ponce.cc/porteus/i486/current/modules/
You will need to activate a module on the fly, put it in the /porteus/modules folder (so that the package boots at each startup), see modules:
http://www.porteus.org/tutorials/9-modu ... dules.html

For saving changes you need the changes cheatcode to be included in your bootloader instructions:
http://www.porteus.org/tutorials/26-gen ... -them.html

You will get the extra packages that you want like brasero and thunderbird thru usm package manager:
panel menu > system > usm

The downloaded packages will be found in the /tmp/usm folder.

You can download other software using USM

update usm before

Code: Select all

root@porteus:/home/guest# usm -u all
choose a package

Code: Select all

root@porteus:/home/guest# usm -g YOUR-PACKAGE
Kdenlive is alternative or better than openshot.
For Kdenlive donwload too mlt package.

With patience and willingness to learn you can leave porteus your way.

We are interested in remaining small and fast. A fast startup time is one of our aims. Adding these modules would slow down boot time by about 1 second so this is not the point. If you want all the added extras by default and don't mind a longer startup then you are welcome to go and use another 4Gb distro that includes it all.
