Yes... and no.
I went to USM menu Updates / Update USM and it told me:

See?
Thanks for the heads up
I hope newer USM versions then get it's own updates right!

Rava I just tested USM on both 64 and 32 bit Mate. I booted into a vanilla Porteus v3.0 install and ran USM update. It updated without any problem showing v3.1.1 after the update (help/about), and then the database update ran successfully without any problem. Both update functions work fine as far as I can see. Since USM is desktop independent i see no reason why it should fail under any other environment. To be sure can you please test from a vanilla version in always fresh mode.

Perhaps it was a bug in the 3.1.0 version which is why I pointed you to sourceforge. To download the latest version manually.

Have you at any stage used the version on github?

Sounds probably... Who knows.... but then it should not update from a vanilla Port 3.0...
Maybe it is some setup info or other issue due to the not able to update one database that created the other bug, not able to update itself...
brokenman wrote:Have you at any stage used the version on github?
Nope...

I sent you news when the next update is available and when I tried USM's own update...

It would help here a lot if you send me an PM telling me that USM updated, since I will not try its update every time I run it, to further debug this issue... :)

FWIW When I tried the USM Update recently it also told me that I had the current version. I had 3.1.0. When I clicked on Update All then I was informed there was a new version of USM and it updated to 3.1.1.

And while posting this I dbl clicked on the USM icon in the taskbar, replied to the Root password prompt and it never came up. I tried 3 times. And it isn't showing in the Task Manager.

Update

Just updated it, sadly there still seems a bug. It again not reads its Password when started from XFCe menu entry.

When started from non root console trying 3 times to give it the correct password I get this:

Code: Select all

@porteus:/proc/20039$ shell-init: error retrieving current directory: getcwd: cannot access parent directories: No such file or directory

@porteus:/proc/20039$ echo $?
0
(The above shell-init error occurs when I started it, even prior giving the first time the password...)

Now, again the only way to run it seems to be from a root terminal.
And this again give an error, but a different one:

Code: Select all

root@porteus:~# ( usmgui & )
root@porteus:~# widget_comboboxtext_input_by_file(): Couldn't open '/tmp/usm.6xZsVj/sbo-categories.tmp' for reading.
root@porteus:~# file /tmp/usm.6xZsVj
/tmp/usm.6xZsVj: directory
At least now its temp dir exists. :)

And its temp dir hold this at startup:

Code: Select all

root@porteus:~# l /tmp/usm.gXOE0d/
total 24
drwx------ 2 root 200 2014-05-08 05:55 .
drwxrwxrwt 18 root 600 2014-05-08 05:55 ..
-rw-r--r-- 1 root 15 2014-05-08 05:55 .stream
-rw-r--r-- 1 root 68 2014-05-08 05:55 filelist
-rw-r--r-- 1 root 168 2014-05-08 05:55 help-pkgtools.tmp
-rw-r--r-- 1 root 0 2014-05-08 05:55 sbocategs
-rw-r--r-- 1 root 8 2014-05-08 05:55 searchType
-rw-r--r-- 1 root 0 2014-05-08 05:55 term1.tmp
-rw-r--r-- 1 root 239 2014-05-08 05:55 welcome
-rw-r--r-- 1 root 239 2014-05-08 05:55 welcome.bak
(Yes, that's from a new session of USM, therefore the different temp dir name...))

But sadly, it still creates an error when updating databases:

Code: Select all

Downloading: LIBS.TXT.gz DONE

sh-4.2#.
And now, the single database updates no longer works, and it removed its temp working dir as it seems:
Trying to update slackware database just gives me this terminal window:

Code: Select all

sh-4.2#
And the terminal from which I started it gives me no error (unlike 3.1.0 version), but asking for its temp dir I realize it now no longer exists::

Code: Select all

# file /tmp/usm.6xZsVj
/tmp/usm.6xZsVj: ERROR: cannot open `/tmp/usm.6xZsVj' (No such file or directory)
...

For now, I try restart USM and try the manual updates of all other databases...
And the first one gives a new error, hopefully not a critical one:

Code: Select all

sh-4.2# usm -u slackware
 Starting slackware database update.
Downloading: vercheck.txt DONE
Downloading: CHECKSUMS.md5 DONE
Downloading: MANIFEST.bz2 DONE
Downloading: PACKAGES.TXT DONE
Downloading: LIBS.TXT.gz DONE
File verification was good.
Optimizing manifest
sed: -e expression #1, char 0: no previous regular expression
 slackware database updated..

You can now close this window
After this manual update, USM again deleted its temp dir... Running another manual update works when I create the same temp dir manually, though:

Code: Select all

sh-4.2# usm -u slacky
 Starting slacky database update.
Downloading: vercheck.txt DONE
Downloading: CHECKSUMS.md5.gz DONE
Downloading: MANIFEST.bz2 DONE
Downloading: PACKAGES.TXT.gz DONE
Downloading: LIBS.TXT.gz DONE
File verification was good.
Optimizing manifest
sed: -e expression #1, char 0: no previous regular expression
 slacky database updated..

You can now close this window.
And again with the sed error... Same with the alien and ponce database: USM deletes its temp dir afterwards, and the same sed error in the terminal it displays.

Alike the screenshot in my old post...

Some Quick 'n dirty Basic Terminal 101, then:

& at the end means: run that command in the background.
( ) encasing the whole command (like in my above example) means: run the program as it's "own parent" (technically, not 100% correct, but for easiness and noobfriendlyness we go for this here), so that, when for some reason the terminal or virtual terminal crashed or was closed, the GUI running program will still run, and not exit cause it's parent exited as well...

I hope I explained it good enough so you got it all? Look it up in # man bash as well...

Why is it called usm-3.1.1-noarch-2.1.rava.xzm when the current version of USM is usm-3.1.1-noarch-2, one might ask.
Cause I like so often slimmed it down, by removing all locale's and local code (that was just Japanese, but still...) and therefore gave it another version...

Ed_p something seriously wrong with your install since the missing files come stock standard with the USM package.

Rava ... I will have to boot into xfce, install 3.1.0 and go from there. I have no doubt you know what you are doing and the problem lies in v3.1.0.
Regarding the temp dir /tmp/usm.XXXXX .... it only exists while the program is running. Once the program exits the directory is removed (you probably already knew that).
Isn't its creator "Jay Flood" the same "Jayflood" who used to be on slax and Porteus forums?
Yes.

Which file do you recommend be downloaded? usm-latest-0.0-noarch-1.txz or usm-3.1.1-noarch-2.txz?

Couldn't wait. Down loaded the 3.1.1 file, converted it to a xzm module, activated it, ran usm in terminal mode and got:

Code: Select all

guest@porteus:~$ cd Downloads
guest@porteus:~/Downloads$ txz2xzm usm-3.1.1-noarch-2.txz
Verifying package usm-3.1.1-noarch-2.txz.

Looks like very invasive troll. Nothing works :o Try Always Fresh Mode, update usm, relaunch usm, update databases, relaunch usm -> should work :good: .

i think it could be due do Ed_Ps save.dat being full. maybe some files could not be copied and went as whiteouts?
just guessing as i never worked with full container.

I know.

But.... what happens when I then reboot with my save.dat file? Do note that I boot from an ISO not an install.
