Porteus Desktop Edition 3.0 rc2 bugs/feedback thread

New features which should be implemented in Porteus; suggestions are welcome. All questions or problems with testing releases (alpha, beta, or rc) should go in their relevant thread here, rather than the Bug Reports section.

@Slaxmax
these errors are ok (harmless). at which stage the booting stops?
please setup changes and when you get a hang reboot to a working system and upload /var/log/messages, /var/log/Xorg.0.log and /var/log/Xorg.1.log (if exist) and link here.

thanks
Please add [Solved] to your thread title if the solution was found.

xfce 3.0 rc2 32bit
boot from usb into allways fresh (+ nvidia 173 in base Folder), all settings are default

I inserted a CD (ide/master-drive) which was automounted then.Now I wanted my
CD back.In Thunar I tried eject (rightclick-menu and the little button)..
unmount/eject..and the open/close at the CD-Drive, all with the same result.
the CD-tray opens and closes immediately again, before I can grab the CD..no chance..

No one else noticed this behavior ??

It's amazing how often this anomaly occurs and then reoccurs. There could be many causes of it and it is hard to trouble shoot since I don't have a desktop computer. Does this only happens in xfce? Can you boot into text mode and type: eject /dev/cdrom

Also try pushing the cd tray button manually to eject it and see if it happens. If it does try to push it again very quickly to see if it stays out. Not very technical I know but it will help to see if the polling/timing of the device is playing a part.
How do i become super user?

Ok, there are no other errors or failures beyond what showed in the previous post.
The system hangs and only reset by the button.
No new log written after the failure.

Please, please feel free to offer fixes as well as suggestions if you get time. It will be a great way to learn a bit about Porteus and will also take some weight off the devs. All maintainers are now stretched for time with real life taking a front seat and meaning less time for porteus. Other distros have many active and contributing members, and we have many members actively contributing too, but I would like to see more in the area of development. For example why doesn't someone take on the task of creating and maintaining a firefox extension module pack for porteus?
The only thing that I'd like to suggest at the moment is to use PAE for 32 bit kernel. As I understand, the only disadvantage is that it won't boot on i486 (but I doubt any recent kernel will boot on i486).
I'm thinking of pros and cons of x86-pae to get the best of both worlds (x86_64 won't boot on older CPUs) and so far didn't find any disadvantages of pae kernel instead of usual 32bit one...

My other suggestions should belong to server version or someone responsible for rc.M script to add check for rc.bond in case of bonding and to add support for nc373i network card, but it's used on servers so I don't think many people will need it.

BTW, thank you for SAS support. I'll probably need it. =)
Suggestions/corrections/additions are always welcome.

The crashes are probably caused by the gpu drivers. I have 2 pc with amd gpu, and another nvidia.
The pc with nvidia gpu hangs ramdomly and the pc with amd gpu rarely crashes. Not a problem of RAM as not accused memtest errors.
The PSU are of good quality, when used windows did not have these problems ..

XFCE 3.0rc2 32bit
regarding the CD-Rom-Drive issue:
what I've done so far is:
disabled "volume management" in thunar
uncheckt every option in settings-> Removeable Drives and Media
boot into text-mode..as root and guest-> eject /dev/cdrom or sr0/sr1 (2 drives)
mount/ umount-> eject..and also the nocd cheatcode (which stopped booting for a little
while at "Triggering udev events")
all done in always-fresh and normal mode
always the same result, The CD-tray goes open-> close (same behavior sr0 / sr1)
and no,pushing, holding, squeezing the open/close Button at the Cd-drives doesn't
make them stay open. :unknown:
---------------------------------------------------------------
btw:
I'm just reporting..if no one else has this issue..never mind..
my Hardware didn't / don't change that fast,so I'm still happy with 2.0 (pre udisks2) :)

boot from usb into allways fresh (+ nvidia 173 in base Folder), all settings are default

No one else noticed this behavior ??
same problem here kde4

@donald
please install original slackware-14.1 package and check if it fixes the issue (i cant reproduce it but my CD tray never closes even if i run 'eject -t /dev/sr0'):
http://packages.slackware.com/?r=slackw ... 6_64-4.txz
http://packages.slackware.com/?r=slackw ... i486-4.txz

@Slaxmax
Xorg log looks ok - are you sure that booting hangs? cane you hear the kde welcome sound? maybe it's another acpi trouble so please boot with 'acpi=off' cheatcode

@Kriss
a) i did release PAE kernel in the past (one of rc from porteus-1.1 if i remember correctly) and soeme people were complaining as not every CPU supports pae instructions. quoting Wikipedia:
Some desktop Linux distributions such as Fedora Core 6, Ubuntu and openSUSE do not enable the HIGHMEM64 option by default, which is required to gain access to the NX bit in 32-bit mode, in their default kernel; this is because the PAE mode that is required to use the NX bit causes pre-Pentium Pro (including Pentium MMX) and Celeron M and Pentium M processors without NX support to fail to boot. Other processors that do not support PAE are AMD K6 and earlier, Transmeta Crusoe, VIA C3 and earlier, and Geode GX and LX.
add check for rc.bond in case of bonding
which package provides rc.bond script?

add support for nc373i network card, but it's used on servers so I don't think many people will need it.
exactly - we are focusing on desktop and size

thank you for SAS support. I'll probably need it. =)
no prob - SAS controllers are sometimes found in desktop PCs so i have added it :)
Please add [Solved] to your thread title if the solution was found.

@fanthom
To be on the safe side I made a fresh installation.no Drivers,nothing extra.
What I can say is that eject / eject -t is working correctly as long as I don't
insert a CD (tray stays open) After inserting a CD the Problem occurs.
The install of the eject-2.1.5-i486-4.txz package does not fix this, but a new
message appeared in CLI:
guest@porteus:~$ eject /dev/sr0
eject: unable to eject, last error: Inappropriate ioctl for device

Kde works "fine", but the system hangs randomly
For example: If run 4 instances glxgears the system hangs .

Ah... A pity then. =(
I used it back then and wasn't aware of these problems so I didn't understand why it wasn't accepted as the default kernel. Sorry =(

I don't know about scripts, I just googled "slackware bonding"
http://www.sgvulcan.com/network-interfa ... sion-13-1/
It's a rare thing for desktop PC to have multiple network cards (which is the case for my maximus IV extreme-z motherboard), and to be honest, I think that this should've been done by someone like Patrick if that's really necessary. But I was baffled by the fact that I had to change rc.M (it was the first time I had to edit it, as far as I remember).
But then again, not many desktop PCs will need it.

Donald it sounds like it is in the core modules if booting to text mode still doesn't work.

Firstly please try a simple permission change on /usr/bin/eject:

Code: Select all

chmod 4755 /usr/bin/eject
Then try to eject as guest.

Secondly please try killing the udev daemon and then try to eject the tray (as root and guest)

Code: Select all

for a in `pgrep -f udevd`; do kill $a ;done
eject -T /dev/cdrom
How do i become super user?
