Feedback and Bug Reports for Porteus v2.1 RC2

New features which should be implemented in Porteus; suggestions are welcome. All questions or problems with testing releases (alpha, beta, or rc) should go in their relevant thread here, rather than the Bug Reports section.

Feedback and Bug Reports for Porteus v2.1 RC2

Hi all,

As announced here: http://forum.porteus.org/viewtopic.php?f=35&t=2306, Porteus v2.1 RC2 has been released!

Please use this thread to report bugs, requests, and other feedback. Please don't post bugs for the release candidates inside the "bug reports" sections of the forum, as those areas are for the current stable version.

Thanks!

Difficulty installing Mate 32-bit to USB drive

I grabbed 32-bit LXDE and Mate iso's, md5sum's checked out okay. Burnt them each to a CD, ran each CD and used Porteus Installer to get them each to a USB drive.

During Porteus Installer activity, LXDE gave me the familiar Pop-Up terminal where I had to hit enter twice. The LXDE USB install worked fine and it boots correctly.

I never got the terminal window during the Mate install using the same process. The Porteus Installer said the installation was finished and I could reboot. However this USB drive will not boot giving me the "no installed operating system" error message.

On the Mate desktop there are two instances of Porteus Installer and I tried them both. Never a terminal pop-up and no boot from the USB drive.

I've tried this on 3 different USB thumb drives without success. Also I've burnt 2 CD's of the Mate iso. No install to USB success with either one.

I'm not sure whether the problem existed in all 2.1rc1 or 2.0 versions as I haven't tried Porteus since 1.2, but this problem keeps making the 2.1rc not fully ready till it is ironed out. While playing multimedia, either local media files in various formats (mp3, m4a, but mostly flac, mp4, avi, xvid etc.), or media on optical drives (both cds and dvds), or media from the web - both html5 and flash/schockwave, the files get started, yet every once in a while sound just stutters, leading the whole multimedia (file) very stuttery. Maximum length of problem-free playback reaches about 10s. Since neither media type, nor format, nor source localisation influences the playback, the problem might lie in either included multimedia codecs or sound drivers/alsa. The effect is present in KDE4 i486, KDE4 x64, LXDE i486, LXDE x64, XFCE x64, XFCE i486 Porteus 2.1 rc2 guises, as well as in rc1 series of the aforementioned archtectures and DEs. Terminal/Console with top/htop commands doesn't show anything useful for pinpointing the problem. And yes, I did try to use persistent, live, live in ram modes, doing clean installs to various drives (USB drives in usb3/2/1, high and low speed ones, advertising-nonames and kingston and ocz and patriots and mach and sandisk, sd cards as well), and on different hardware - from intel core 2 gen integrated mobo, through nvidia graphics, to core i3/i5 integrated and external solutions, through a number of external soundcard systems to via chipsets. I did try a number of other linuxes on the same hardware and no problems were recorded. Of course YMMV, but I do hope you know of a solution.
ps. I used both the default gnome player and as provided modules, installed gstreamer and vlc modules to no avail.

Mate-DE-32bit
rightclick on clock in top-panel > preferences > crash

If I use an (on my mashine) not working app (i.e. Cpu-scaling) it is
invisible in the panel (no Icon),so it's hard to find it to delete it
we should have a list (like in XFCE) to see whitch apps are already in the panel and were they are

@sean
I think you know a solution ,do you?
for anyone else:
Just copying the two Folders (boot and porteus) out of the iso onto
your usb-stick, run installer for linux.com ( all done as root)
will give you a bootable one.

porteus v 2.1 rc2
Google Chrome Version 28.0.1500.71
Adobe Flash player 11.7.700.203

When flash plugin is enabled every page that has any flash content is blacked out.
I think it might be the "use hardware acceleration" option
but i cannot click it because window is all black ;)

Thanks,
Silas

Can you please provide a specific link. I can't reproduce this. Flash as tested on various sites. Also please supply your video card specs.

Donald
Clock preference crash - confirmed (SEE BUGFIX BELOW)
cpu-scaling. I had the same problem with cpu-scaling applet being invisible when i compiled on my laptop (64bit quad core). After compiling it on a 32bit machine it now shows for me. I have reservations about this applets compatibility with all machines. There is one other applet (mount applet) that i find invisible. Most likely due to a missing icon.

mkarwin
I will need to reboot into another DE to test because under Mate i can't reproduce this problem with ogg, flac, mp3 or wav. Can anyone else confirm this?

Sean
Pinstaller bug confirmed. ktsuss is not exporting all root variables in mate and launching mate-terminal as root doesn't connect to the session manager. I'll fix this. For now boot from a working Porteus and install to USB as shown above. Just mount the ISO, copy all files to USB and run the install script.

Code: Select all

mloop /path/to/Porteus-MATE-v2.1rc2-i486.iso
cp -a /mnt/loop/* /mnt/sdxY/ #(sdxY here is your USB drive)
cd /mnt/sdxY/boot
sh Porteus-installer-for-Linux.com
So far these all look like great pieces of feedback. Thanks.

@donald

Thanks, yes I'm good here, thank you. This is great isn't it?!

@brokenman

After our previous discussions, I apologize, I should have discovered and reported this much sooner. Hopefully I won't be late again.

No problem Sean. The fault is more mine. Mate was late out of the gate so i am expecting to squashfs a few more bugs for the final release. For example the slew of errors on shutdown, especially the g_dbus error, which are puzzling to me.

For Mate I would strongly suggest porting/incorporating the "GNOME-Color-Chooser" (Debian) application to Porteus, if possible.

This app allows one to make fine/precise adjustments to backgrounds/colors and fonts/colors across the system, especially in the panels. I have found that gnome-color-chooser is the only way I can adjust the size & color of text fonts in the gnome panel(s).

Please include your computer make/model too. You may require an older version of flash.

Sean
There is a MATE-color-chooser but it is not yet mature. i will look at GNOME-color-chooser. I've fixed the pinstaller problem in the least intrusive way. Will push the update for final.

Most of the problems discussed with the mate module, with only an exception are solved in the mate DE porteus edition. This is good work. 8)

Dual display is provided automatically, this is great. No conspicuous problems in root mode: this is great.

What differences should we expect between root an guest mode?

1) It is impossible to add more than one additional wallpaper in the:
change background > background (window)

Adding another wallpaper will have the effect of removing the precedent.

There shouldn't be any differences between root and guest. I am working hard to iron out these bugs. Let me know if you find any.

Regarding the wallpaper change, I have no problem adding a second wallpaper and it doesn't overwrite the first. After right clicking on the desktop adding your new wallpaper you will need to copy the following files into your rootcopy folder (assuming an always fresh boot):
/home/guest/.config/mate/backgrounds.xml
/home/guest/.config/dconf/user

These are the config files for backgrounds and for the general mate interface.

It seems I forgot to update the porteus-update mechanism for v2.1 release candidates. This will be functioning for final. For now I can deliver updates to mate in this way. To fix the problem with the crashing clock please do this:

1) Open a root console
2) Type: pbundle update (hit enter)
3) Type: pbundle get clock (hit enter)

This should stop the clock from crashing on right click/preferences. be aware that I have removed the weather function from the clock. It is very heavy and I don't believe it is in high demand. Unfortunately the MATE developers have it tightly integrated into the desktop. If someone could test this delivery system I would appreciate it.
